Parasite screen before worming?

I have been using Bob Martin tablets to worm DCat for the past year or two, but thanks to the Litter Tray I have learnt that these aren't very effective. However, my vet won't prescribe a veterinary-grade wormer without seeing DCat first to do a "parasite screen". What does this involve and is it really necessary? Should I just buy Drontal from PetsAtHome? DCat hates going to the vet so I'm reluctant to subject him to a parasite screen if there is no real need to have one.

Hopeful bump...

Never heard of a parasite screen but they might want to weigh and check him over as the wormers are weight dependent.

Thanks Pixie, maybe that's it. He's in good condition so I'm not concerned that he's currently burdened with parasites, and was vaccinated recently and got a clean bill of health. I can weigh him at home so I think I'll do that, and then treat with Drontal.

Except under very rare circumstances, vets can no longer prescribe medication unless they've seen your cat within the last six months. It's part of the new veterinary regulations.

I'd be very surprised if they expected a stool sample but they will need to see your cat and check their overall health and weight etc. before prescribing.

You could use OTC medication but it won't be as effective and doesn't always cover all kinds of worms.

Thanks Coffee but I don't think that's the reason, as they saw my cat just before Christmas for his vaccinations and the vet weighted him (he'd actually put on weight) and did all the usual checks.

I was thinking of buying Drontal, which I understand is more effective than the Bob Martin type wormers. It covers roundworm and tapeworm - do I need anything more than this?

Ah, I didn't realise he'd seen the vet that recently.

Personally I would want a wormer that covers lungworm - Panacur is a good option.
