New kittens are super nervous won't come out of hiding

We picked up two 9 week old kittens yesterday and although they were played with at the home they were born in I’m not sure they’ve been handled/cuddled much yet.
They have spent most of the time since we got them home last night hidden away under the sofa, they seem really terrified.
Please tell me they won’t always be like this?! I was so excited but I feel disheartened as they seem sooo scared.
Is it just the new settling in phase and they need to learn to trust us?
I think we made the mistake of opening up the whole house to them and they are just running away from us everywhere all around the house and hiding in places.
Should we get them used to us in one room first?
Any advice much appreciated. Thanks

Haha love it!
I got this toy thinking they may not use it but it's been the best thing ever 😂 hours of fun! That and the laser pen 😆

We are now essentially a spring retrieval service for the fluffy overlords as they have massive plastic spring addiction and enjoy hidding them under furniture then shouting until someone lies on the floor with a stick to poke them out with.

Oh yes the plastic springs! There are 6 of them in my house but only my kitten knows where. She brings a couple up to bed most nights.

Occasionally one we thought was long lost will reappear and they will be all 'hey look it yellow spring, we have missed you so much' but then it will vanish again.

Cats Protection foster carer here - you’ve had lots of good advice but my best tip is to give them a smallish contained space with access all the time to their bed, which should be covered. Handle them a lot, but within that space for the first week or so and then allow them to explore at their own pace. I’ve had some hissy spit-pots but they settle eventually. I hand over at 10-12 weeks usually as I generally have abandoned teeny kits that need night feeding and I just sleep downstairs with them if they’re v young. Have fun. Cats are ace.

Give it time. I sat quietly with my rescue cat for 4 days just chatting and reading while he hid under the sofa or with his head under a cushion.

Then he decided I was OK and we've never looked back.

He slept on my bed on night 4.

Time, quiet, let them get used to sounds and smells in their own time.

My first cat was put in the kitchen on the first night, cried until the door was opened, marched past, up the stairs and settled straight away.

@LiveLifeToTheFull2 @Nottheeightoutoftencats those kittens are gorgeous !! They all seem engrossed in that toy: what does it do?

Nottheeightoutoftencats · 22/02/2024 22:49

Mine are much bigger now - nearly fully grown 🥹. The toy has a ball 'trapped' between each layer which they can push round. Mine like to sit either side and have a 'tennis match' hitting balls back and forth between them. Our was part of DH's leaving gift from his cat mad old team. They knew I was trying to persuade him to get a cat after 5 cat free years so loaded him up with cat toys and 'cat dad' merch.

Aw this is lovely. Well done for what you do 🥰
They seem to be much more confident with my husband and I but not so keen to have an excitable 7 year old stroke them 😆

Pixiesgirl · 22/02/2024 23:13

Lovely cats anyone got a link for the tower toy or springs? Always looking for good toy ideas.

For some reason it won't let me generate a link but type cat spring into Amazon.

Nottheeightoutoftencats · 22/02/2024 23:29

Again Amazon ball track and springs. Again it won't generate a link for some reason.

We got ours when thry were 6 months. We first kept them in the utility room and they his behind the washing machine for a week. We used to put a mirror there to see them. They only came out at night to eat or use the litter tray

One very gradually became more friendly, one is still very shy, more than 7 years later!

The springs I got from Sainsbury’s.

Sunshineandrainbow · 23/02/2024 17:07

Glad things are progressing.
Love the photo of them!

justthecat · 23/02/2024 19:40

Loads of toys on Amazon

helpfulperson · 23/02/2024 19:52

What gorgeous colouring. The relationship between them and the 7 year old will be a bit of meeting in the middle. They will learn to be less scared and she will learn to be a bit less excitable
