Apple air tag collars

Thinking of putting apple gps air tag on my 8 month old kitten. Does anyone have any recommendations for collars that work with air tags? I don't really want to use Tractive as it's expensive and the collars look too bulky for my kitten. Xx

I wouldn't bother. We put one on our cat and the collar has fallen off somewhere, we've gone to the last location of the tag and still can't find it. It was a waste of money for us

Oh no!!

Air tags are huge and not really great for cat tracking. They rely on the tracker coming in to close proximity of an iPhone.

I've not found any suitable trackers - they are all so big!

I've also lost trackers because my cat will squeeze through tiny gaps and the collar will release, to keep him safe - but leaves the tracker somewhere unrecoverable.

Will your cat keep a collar on? Mine disposes of a collar in about 5 mins 🤷🏽‍♀️

butteriesplease · 19/02/2024 12:20

I have a Tractive one on my cat, and she's not massive (bit under 4kg) and isn't bothered by it. mostly hidden by her fur to be honest. also, I had taken out the posh option, and when she lost her tracker, they sent me a new one for free.
they recommend a particular collar with it, but any quick release is probably fine.
you can see where she is (in a 3m zone I think ) and can get stats on where she's been, so it's not just live tracking. I did quite a bit of looking, and tractive was the only one that looked decent. You do pay the subs upfront rather than monthly, just so you're aware.

We've lost 2! It was good though while he was wearing it as I got a good idea of just how far he strolls!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/02/2024 14:32

My parents cat wears one. Although he's not been out side of his new house yet. He's always loosing collars. But not this one yet. And at least they'll be able to find it if he does . 🤣

When my wayward cat kept it on (about 9 months) it was brilliant. Very enlightening as to where he goes, but as other posters have said, he decided to take it off and I retrieved it a few times but now it’s somewhere I can’t get to.

AnnaMagnani · 19/02/2024 14:38

I have a Tractive - the small cat ignores it completely, the big cat feels very affronted by it.

It works brilliantly but is annoying when they lose it in a field you can't reach.

When an Airtag is away from it's owner and moving it beeps - an anti stalking device.

Our elderly 20 yr old cat wears a Tabcat, she doesn’t go out very much these days but still likes a stroll down the garden and is deaf (or has selective hearing) so wouldn’t always come when we called her. In the summer she sleeps in bushes and we couldn’t always locate her on warm summer nights before bedtime and it was such a worry!

She had thyroid issues and had lost weight so we didn’t want anything heavy or bulky, GPS ones seemed to be heavier and bulkier (thyroid treated now btw!) The Tabcat fits on a normal collar and weighs about 5 grams.

Shes worn it for just under a year and it’s been worth its weight in gold. Think the range isn’t huge though, maybe 150m so not great for cats who wander afar.

Finlay has had an AirTag on his collar since he was about 12 weeks old
I just bought the rubber AirTag cases on Amazon which slide onto any collar - he’s currently on a red one as still wearing his red glitter flea collar left over from Xmas

It is much much safer for cats not to wear a collar. Even a quick release collar can fail to release.

We would not have found Finlay as quickly without the tracker on his collar after he broke his pelvis and fractured his spine in December (we assume was hit by a car) - it’s loose enough and elasticated that he could get it off if he needed to but as he’s had it from being quite young he’s used to it

I just bought a cheap AirTag cat collar if Amazon.

I have three kittens and after a getting list for four days incident with one of them I put AirTags on all three.

Two didn't care but one was constantly trying to get the collar off. He got it off after two weeks but by that point I had a good idea of where they tended to go and do where to look for them if they didn't come home.

One did stay out all night but with the AirTag I had a pretty good idea where he was (not far) and he turned up the next morning.

They are currently all AirTag free but that might change if one gets list again.
