Mouse in the house!

Our naughty cat brought a mouse in a d as I tried to chase her out with it still in her mouth, she let go and it was alive!

Unfortunately, it's now disappeared in our living room somewhere, as I tried in vain to catch it. It's probably hiding under the piano which I am not moving.

Dh has laid a couple of traps with the living room door shut, an we've locked our cat out in case she brings another in.

Is there anything we could do to coax it out of hiding or is it a waiting game?

Here she is, looking as if she owns the place.

We’ve had this so many times. Your best bet is to leave your cat in the room with the mouse as she’s best placed to catch it.

I use a metal tape measure to skim under furniture to get it running. Your cat will be able to smell it and will show you where it is.

I had this this week. The cats stalked it for a couple of days without success and then it went into the kitchen so I was able to shut them in there with it and open the back door. I think it ran out although am being vigilant for a little corpse hidden away.

Thanks for your replies.
Okay, so I've unsprung the traps and let the cat back in when she did her begging eyes at the cat flap!
No sign of the mouse, but the cat is asleep in the living room. Hopefully, it will come out soon!

Argh we had this at the weekend 😩 it scuttled behind a kitchen cupboard. It came out a couple of times but ran back as soon as we tried to go anywhere near it. We left the cat in the kitchen overnight and there has been no sign of it since. I’m not convinced the cat ate it though as she doesn’t usually. I’m telling myself it found a way outside…

This is precisely why I have Persians, who are clever enough to hunt! OP, your cat does own the place. She's gorgeous!

I hate to be the one to say this but if it's died somewhere you'll probably only realise when you get an invasion of flies 🤢. We came back from a weekend away to find about 50 flies in our bedroom. I literally had EVERYTHING out before discovering a dead mouse caught under the headboard. There were so many empty fly cases. It actually makes me feel sick to think all those flies would have been maggots crawling around under our bed WITHOUT US EVEN KNOWING.
Thank god we were away. They could have been squirming on us in our sleep 😱
Sorry. That probably isn't what you wanted to hear. I hope you find the begger.

I remember this happening in my childhood home, only it wasn't a cat who brought it in. We could literally see the damn thing in a cupboard under the sink. Brought in cat #1 and stuck him in the cupboard. Stupid boy made no effort to catch it so we brought in cat #2 who was a ferocious killer of mice and rats. She didn't get it either!

Eventually my parents managed to chase it out the back door where cat #2 deftly caught it as it ran by!

Saw my older one in the field next door yesterday and thought oh no... and now have a 7 month old begging to go out

xsquared · 21/02/2024 23:21

We've had the humane mouse traps set behind the sofa against the wall, and I've checked them a couple of times, but nothing. :(

I'm hoping we don't get to that stage @samsond! The vacuuming is due, so I will be extra thorough just in case!

Poor thing must be terrified!

xsquared · 21/02/2024 23:38

@Belovedbagle I only wish it was put out of its misery the instant the cat caught it!

I had this last year. It scuttled under the sofa which is too heavy to move. During the night it squeezed under the door and died in the laundry basket in the kitchen
Neither of my cats are allowed past the kitchen now when they come in until they've been checked for prey.

pinkhousesarebest · 22/02/2024 00:25

This is commonplace in our house. Mostly little field voles which I desperately try to find and release safely .In general though, they are dispatched in the middle of the night by one or other of the cats. This is the main reason I don’t have a cat flap.

Julianne65 · 22/02/2024 12:13

OMG your cat is absolutely gorgeous!

learieonthewildmoor · 26/02/2024 12:34

We’ve gone to bed with a mouse under the fridge, and Cat Two waiting for it to emerge. Third mouse she has brought in.

My cats bring them in, and either scare them to death (so I find a poor little mouse body in the kitchen) or let them go, where they race behind the fridge/cupboards and can happily live there, venturing out to snack on whatever they can get in the cupboards :S

I bought an electrocution trap, since I remember mice taking much longer to die in the traditional ones than I liked when I was a kid (plus yes, idiot cat would probably get caught by it), and the humane traps seemed to kill them anyway - again perhaps from fear - but definitely slowly. I put in a nice square of chocolate, so they at least have a decent last meal before going quick, and put it in the bottom of one of the cupboards.

Samsond · 26/02/2024 13:58

We've added a second bell to Her Majesty's collar. She seemed to have learned a way to move without making the first bell.jingle but she can't seem to outsmart 2 at once. Hasn't brought a mouse in since. Might be worth a try?

They don’t usually move away from the food source. They’d have all been tucked away inside the mouse.
