Got our cat from the RSPCA 10 years ago he was on RC kitten food as he got older we stuck to that brand. He has fresh chicken or tuna on a weekend and lots of water. Never any problems.

A friend today said Royal Canin is rubbish and she said she had read somewhere that it wasnt very good.

Anyone comment on this?

It is too much grain, which cats are not evolved to eat and can cause inflammation. We switched to a brand called Wellness that's much better nutritionally, but I don't know if it's available in the UK.

Some research in the US has found that grain free diets can lead to heart disease.

TemporaryCatSlave · 19/02/2024 18:40

TemporaryCat is on RC Fibre Response as he gets constipated and it definitely helps keep him regular! But I also mix it with Thrive chicken and Purr & Miaow fish (Amazon) dry food which are much higher in meat content and don't costs anywhere near as much.

I do think RC is expensive for what it is so unless your cat needs it for a medical reason, if I was you I'd swap to something cheaper and higher meta.

Clarich007 · 20/02/2024 09:29

Maybe my view is simplistic, but surely cats do not need grains. They are obligate carnivores.
I've seen vets on here before recommending RC.What's the truth? It's all very confusing!

FancyJapflack · 20/02/2024 09:35

It is pretty shit.
Vets are generally clueless about nutrition. They will try to flog you Hills Science Plan for instance which is awful.
One of the giveaways that RC is shit is that they do about 20 different foods for different breeds.
There are a couple of breeds that may have specific nutritional requirements ie Dalmatians but Labradors for instance do not need different food than other breeds. It’s a con.

There's a huge gap between grain free and 85% grain and fillers though.

I'm a vet (and do NOT get paid by these companies!!!)and I would happily have my own animals on Hill's or Royal Canin and most of the animals I see on these brands are extremely healthy with beautiful coats and teeth. The amount of research that goes into their foods is insane!!!

I genuinely don't understand why vets recommend a food that's so high in grains and fillers for an animal that's supposed to be an obligate carnivore.

Can you explain the reasoning?

AlltheFs · 20/02/2024 11:52

I like Scrumbles over RC, but my two also
like Whiskas wet food which is fairly shite but they love it (they have mostly dry food, with a shared pouch a couple of times a day).

If it aint broke….

My golden retriever is on royal canin and is perfectly healthy with a lovely shiny coat. I think people who say it’s rubbish are usually into natural raw food diets for cats and dogs which aren’t for everyone. There are pros and cons to every diet but I think royal canin is fine as far as kibble diets go.

Nope - all my animals are on kibble and wet, just not RC as I don't believe they need all those grains and fillers in their diets.

I know that Vets are often encouraged to endorse these foods like Royal Canin, they send out gift bags, endorsements, education. The smaller higher-meats content brands don’t have the money to endorse their products to vets. So yes cats will be ok on these big brands, but there is also a growing obesity and joint problem in pets. RC is like eating crisps and shop bought sandwiches every day for all meals. Whereas others are like a full meal. My dad feeds his dogs raw food and they are healthiest dogs I have ever seen. I don’t have the time to make this for my cats, so it’s all about balance. I recommend Applaws dry food or Scrumbles

Royal Canin pays a lot of money to Vet Schools.
Vets up and down the country will only recommend their food , as well as Hill's who also contribute handsomely to Vet Schools.

These foods are cereal heavy with lots of vitamins added.

Our dog became poorly and our vet strongly recommended RC or Hill's. We knew they would. We went by their recommendation as we felt pressured.
Our dog started to refuse food and actually became more poorly. We persisted but after a couple of months we went back for a further investigation and to complain.
Our dog had lost too much weight too quickly and we weren't happy.

Turns out that vet wasn't happy and advised us to go back to our previous food .

IMO the two most important things are that they eat it, and you can afford it.

This!!! Tried my little love on all the expensive brands, Beast, Lily's kitchen and more but he only liked Purina One.
And M&S chargrilled chicken, but just on the day it was opened; Co-op thin sliced honey roast ham but only on the day it was opened, and marvellously for a time, Aldi basic chicken bits. How I miss him.

Rc food especially Regular fit is good. I used to read in forums that feed high protein diets no grains should be fef. The end result was my five year old cat god kidney failure due to high phosphorus levels. These people on the forums misguide people. Fact is little grains are good for digestive system, anal gland issues etc. Grain free can cause constipation in cats. Not all cats can handle high phosphorus levels. In the wild cats eat grain free, yes but not for every meal and they have to work hard to find food so it balances it out. Our house cats get meat every day for every meal causing damage to the kidneys due to high phosphorus levels over time
