Untamed food?

Shiveringinthecountry · 16/02/2024 20:47

Hi all,

Has anybody tried this? I'm having a problem getting my cat to eat properly, and having been through everything in the supermarket I bought a trial box of this and it came today.

The food looks and smells great (I've opened the chicken, and the tuna and shrimp) but the cat won't even lick it.

If you've tried it, did it take your cat a while to settle into it?

My cat and my mum's cats all took to Untamed straight away, but it's recommended to transition food fairly slowly with cats. Typically I've been told do do 3/4 old food, 1/4 new food on the first day, then 1/2 and 1/2 on day 2 and 1/4 old and 3/4 new on day 3, moving to 100% new food on day 4. If at any point your cat doesn't want to eat or has GI issues, stay at that point for a few days until that settles.

However this does rely on there being at least something that your cat will eat!

My cat is very GI sensitive and I'm trying to transition her food at the moment even more slowly than in the guidelines above as she vomits very easily. I really like Untamed, can't afford to feed it all the time but I would if I could. I hope your cat comes round to it.

KittenKaboodle · 16/02/2024 21:42

My cat adores Untamed (gravy) more than anything. It took us a little while to wean her off her Felix AGAIL and onto it though. We did as @ella142 mentions and mixed a bit alongside the Felix.

Now she gobbles it down and licks the bowl spotless. We also like that it doesn’t smell awful and looks good too. She’s been eating it for about 4 months and her coat is so thick and soft and glossy. Hopefully if you persevere you will get there.

Clarich007 · 16/02/2024 22:03

My cat took to it straight away, but he's a dustbin anyway, and as a former homeless street cat is usually grateful for anything.
I can't afford to feed it to him all the time, so I dip in and out of his subscription. Their customer service is brilliant, and they give advice as well.

Shiveringinthecountry · 16/02/2024 22:35

Thanks, all of you I really appreciate the advice.

In view of your experiences I'll persist. Unfortunately he really isn't eating anything of any substance at the moment (he has some dry every day, but will just lick gravy/jelly off wet food) so I haven't really got the means to transition him properly I'll keep putting it down, though. It looks so great that it's hard to believe he won't enjoy it.

It's great to hear that customer services are good as well. I appreciate the reassurance ❤️

We feed untamed. He won't touch the chicken flavours but loves the fish ones. Also only the gravy is complete. Jelly is complimentary

Laurama91 · 17/02/2024 17:52

Also, second the service being spot on. I emailed to check my cat was OK to eat only fish and they emailed back quickly to give me all info on what fish they use and that it's safe. I also emailed because I received a damaged taped up box (I think this was a dpd issue) and dented tins. They gave me 25% back. I genuinely believe this wasn't an untamed issue, it wasn't in branded box so I just wanted to make them aware and wasn't expecting anything back

Shiveringinthecountry · 17/02/2024 21:09

Maybe I'll contact them and ask them to send some gravy ones. We're on the third tin now (chicken, tuna and something with shrimps) and he's literally not taken a single bite. They're all jelly. I don't want the monthly subscription to kick in until I've seen him eat some 👍

Well, here is some information for anybody else who might be looking into Untamed.

I did get in touch with them in email to explain that my cat won't eat the jelly tins (all the tins in the trial box were jelly) and to ask whether I could buy some gravy tins instead, to see whether he would eat those. I wasn't asking for a second trial box (i.e. I wasn't asking for a discounted price), and made it clear that I was happy to pay for postage. I'm just trying to find something that my cat will eat, and fairly naturally don't have to buy a whole month's worth in case it turns out that he won't eat the gravy either.

Unfortunately, this isn't something they are willing to allow me to do. I can't buy a few gravy tins (plus postage) to see whether my cat will eat them. They will only sell me a minimum of 28 tins (which would be a cost of £50+).

To be honest I don't find this impressive, and bearing in mind their unusual subscription system to me it doesn't make sense that they won't allow new users to buy a smaller quantity at full price per tin and pay for postage, to see whether their cat will eat it. It's a pity, as I can see that the food in the tins looks and smells great, but that's no good if my cat won't eat it.

The jelly food is complementary anyway so can't be a cat's only food source.

They are good though. Mine likes their freeze dried chicken treats on top, it tempts him to eat the rest once he gets through the chicken. Would that be an option for you?

Shiveringinthecountry · 18/02/2024 15:26

Hi @hoarahloux and thanks for replying.

Any of their other lines would have been an option for me, but they won't do anything except sell me a whole month's worth of tins. They won't let me buy a few gravy tins to see whether it's just the jelly tins he won't eat. I can't afford to spend £50+ on a month's food just in case.

Given that this is a problem caused by illness (and illness is apparently why the range began), that I've explained and that I've asked to buy a few of the kind of tins they didn't send in the trial at the price of their choice (i.e. monthly fee/28), plus postage, I'm very unimpressed and really rather astonished by their intransigence.

I know the jelly is not a complete meal, btw. My cat has Royal Canin dry food available 24/7. He used to eat only that until towards the end of last year he developed hyperthyroidism and stopped eating properly. Since then I'e been struggling to find something to supplement the dry food and appease his obvious hunger.

Hate to be pessimistic, but are you sure he is well. My old boy’s last couple of months he was refusing or just licking the jelly. Turns out he had a tumour, missed by vet despite scan. I spent a fortune on different foods and he was losing weight. Hope he is just a cat being fussy

Qqbank01 · 20/02/2024 00:47

My cat used to eat untamed and reordered few times, the food smell good and ingredients is good, texture is shredded meat, she like both chicken fish.
But she is tired on this texture (i guess?) and refuse to finish her meal, so i have to change to cool cat club with different texture

floppybit · 20/02/2024 02:21

My cats are fussy bastards and they won't touch untamed. We have tried every possible subscription for 'posh' cat food and they hate all of it except for Katkin which comes frozen.

anothermnuser123 · 20/02/2024 02:50

If you want to try a similar brand, the pets at home brand seriously good have tins thats are really similar to untamed. Also sainsburys do delicious recipes.

Shiveringinthecountry · 20/02/2024 21:36

Thanks, all of you 👍 Interesting to hear that here are other cats that don't want to eat the more expensive brands.

I actually started looking online earlier this evening for cat gravy! Since that's all he'll actually swallow (well, jelly too) I suspect I won't find any food at all that he'll actually eat.

I'll try the Sainsbury's and Pets at Home, thanks.

@Mumsgirls That's what I'm worried about 😢 I know he isn't well as he's been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and we're in the process of trying to identify the right dose, but the vet has told me she sees no point in a scan. I've had die very suddenly in the past of conditions unsuspected by vets, so yes - this is a worry. I think we'll just have to keep monitoring his weight when he goes in for regular repeat blood tests, and if it keeps falling I'll bring up scans again.

For cat gravy, again pets at home, they sell a broth. I believe that is seriously good brand too

xCharlotte91x · 10/03/2025 00:50

I'm interested what the outcome was..
My ragdoll also won't eat just kicks the heavy or eats the jelly. Tried several brands.

Nosebooper · 10/03/2025 01:10

My mum feeds her cats Untamed. They do love it but I've just realised she's been feeding them just chicken in jelly for probably at least half a year! I didn't know it as complementary, she obviously doesn't either. I'll tell her tomorrow, but wondered what problems this could cause.
