Recommendations for good quality wet cat food

My two cats have been eating Felix and I occasionally give them plain shredded chicken, but my tabby has very loose and stinky poos. I know they should be on better quality food but the range available is really confusing!

Any recommendations for cat food that is high in meat content? I’m happy to pay for decent food but not sure what I should expect to be paying.

The only decent one mine will eat is Applaws although i think its a complementary food rather than a complete food. The rest they will eat are lower quality. They do eat a decent grain free, high meat dry food though

Superbloo · 16/02/2024 19:48

@dementedpixie Good to know, thank you. What dry food do you use?

Mine like thrive dry and vets kitchen dry. I buy them online or most recently from Sainsbury's

ItsBeenOneWeek · 16/02/2024 20:16

Katkin.

Ecstaticmotion · 16/02/2024 20:19

Might your tabby have a stomach bug? My cat had loose poos for a few days and he had a light dose of giardia, worth getting it checked at vet cos it may just be that, not food. Also do you give them cat milk? That also causes mine to have loose poo.

Sewaccidentprone · 16/02/2024 20:23

Second Katkin. Dcat is thriving on it when used regularly used to regurgitate meal

My foster cat came with Whiskas pouches and As Good As It Gets, I'm not feeding her that because there were problems with it not long ago. I've been giving her the Whiskas and am now introducing Butchers Classic tinned, as I've read it's the cheapest grain free cat food.

Bozita from Zooplus is meant to be good and grain free.

JamMakingWannaBe · 16/02/2024 20:28

Larger Lidl stores do a grain free cat food in pouches.

Bitteralmond · 16/02/2024 20:30

I second Applaws as a food that a lot of cats find palatable and is good quality. Canagan is also good. You might also consider raw feeding. Cats are obligate carnivores and often do well on raw. Some ranges do cat-sized packs. Albion do a freeflow mince which can be poured frozen into a dish in desired quantity, then left to thaw. It is marketed at dogs, but meat is meat. It is screened for various bacteria. Don't feed supermarket meat, if you go the raw route, as it is assumed this will be cooked and may not have been screened as thoroughly.

ClumsyNinja · 16/02/2024 20:31

Look for grain free cat foods. I had a cat who was very allergic and had asthma attacks if he ate wheat.

I tend to buy from zooplus online. Otherwise supplement with tinned tuna in spring water etc.

Precipice · 16/02/2024 20:35

Wild Freedom is good. Feringa used to be good, but I think the meat content has gone down.

Purizon grain-free dry food, available online from Bitiba or Zooplus. Our cats all prefer the fish variety.

Funnily enough I've just pasted about Untamed. It looks great and is high in meat. My cat hasn't taken to it yet but that may be because he's unfamiliar with things that are not full,of jelly or gravy 🤞

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 16/02/2024 21:45

We get untamed, it's brilliant and my fussy (and allergy prone) cats love it. It is expensive though and gets delivered once a month

KittenKaboodle · 16/02/2024 21:46

Untamed (gravy) gets the paws up from my cat. She also likes Pets and Home’s Seriously Good chicken and fish in jelly range. That’s a good bit cheaper than Untamed, but annoyingly comes in plastic pouches. Pets at Home also does an amazing canned tuna in gravy (seriously good range) but it is never in stock, so I don’t recommend that even though the cat adores it.

Superbloo · 16/02/2024 23:57

Brilliant, thanks everyone, I’ll check out all these options

after trying lots of very expensive cat food, all of which was apparently sub par, we have settled on Royal Canin which is an eye watering £15 per box, but the only food our 17yo cat will eat without being sick.

Cooking Fat!

Puppylucky · 17/02/2024 17:06

Before our cat was switched to Royal Canin renal due to CKD he absolutely adored Cosma wet from Zooplus which did look good to be fair! Nice and firm poos as well

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 17/02/2024 19:12

Animonda Carny (available on ZooPlus) is a good quality one though it smells absolutely horrendous Grin

ScoopyDoo · 17/02/2024 19:25

Our cat also has an upset tummy and/or smelly poo unless we stick to grain free. I buy James Wellbeloved grain free dry and supplement with applaws tuna, and he is thriving on that (and won’t eat anything else now).

Spinet · 17/02/2024 19:27

We buy a big box of nature's menu from Zooplus or Amazon. Cats like it and it's in small tins so recyclable but no half tins in the fridge (which I hate).

Mine loved Animonda Carny when i bought it. Unfortunately it had the opposite effect on their litter trays compared with what I had hoped. So I stopped getting it.

Canthave2manycats · 17/02/2024 19:45

My new rescue boy came with theeeee most stinky poos ever! Two or three times a day and loose-ish.

Someone recommended Scrumbles dry food and omg he loves it, and the poo smell is massively reduced! It's been a lifesaver lol! He doesn't eat much wet food, though I've got the Scrumbles one to try as well. It's in small tins and I'm only giving him half a tin at a time because he doesn't eat much of it.

It suited mine but it was so expensive that we couldn't justify it anymore sadly. Mine are currently on Sheba - horrendous according to many I'm sure but it suits them, they do solid, non-smelly poos and lick their bowls clean every meal.

SheerLucks · 18/02/2024 02:09

We now have two cats, but when our first was a kitten he reacted badly to Felix.

We now feed them The Cheshire Cat's Garden wet food and Canagan's dry food and they are really thriving - great muscular build, high energy and interaction - just happy cats. It's so worth the extra money IMO.
