We've had our rescue cat for 9 years, she was found in a garden, her age when she was estimated at 5 years, so she's approx 13 years old, though I suspect she's older.

She has long, thick fur, is very aggressive and won't let anyone groom her. I've had a groomer come round and taken her to a groomer and both said she was the most aggressive cat they've encountered and neither were able to groom her. I have no option but to wait until her fur gets matted then take her to the vet. They put her under general anaesthetic and shave her.

Recently she seems unhappy eg hissing more at our other cat, hissing and grumbling at all the humans in the house if we step near her or walk past her.

She is also having problems with poo, a couple of times she's leaked poo while on a bed or sofa, other times I find smears of poo on things she's sat on, yesterday I found a bigger poo on our living room floor. I'd previously blamed the leaky poo incidents on her eating things she shouldn't have, and the poo smears on her matted fur meaning poo gets stuck there, but the big poo on the floor makes me wonder if she's incontinent. She's matted at the moment and smells very bad sometimes (after a poo I think) but it's too cold to take her to get shaved.

What would you do in this situation with a cat who is obviously unhappy? I'm considering a visit to the vet but feel like it'll be a waste of money, as I don't think she's ill, just old and grumpy and aggressive!

When animals start soiling themselves it's a sign something is wrong. Cats are usually fastidiously clean. They don't show they are ill the same way humans do. I'm afraid it doesn't sound good.

I'd still take her to be shaved. Long haired cats and poo are a bad mix. It does sound like she needs some investigation by the vet.

Definitely vet. Our vet nurses can clip parts off even our former feral without sedation, it's worth asking what the nurses at your practice are happy to do. She does sound like a thorough check up would be a good idea. They can be grumpy if they're in pain, so if nothing else you need to rule that out or treat it.

You think she’s just old and grumpy? But you don’t actually have any idea. You need to get the cat checked by a vet.
