Male cat keeps weeing on my bed

There's nothing physically wrong with him. I've spent hundreds of pounds on urine tests, blood tests, and multiple vet visits. I had him to the vet on Mon, he got a clean bill of health and he has weed on my bed multiple times since.

He has access to a clean tray at all times. I've tried every sort of litter I can get my hands on and it makes no difference.

He's nine months old and is booked in for a neuter on Thur - yes it should have been done sooner but I've been struggling to get an appointment!

He's an inside cat only because it isn't safe for him to go outside. He gets plenty of attention and playtime.

I don't know what else to do - I'm at my wits end. I've literally just got my duvet washed and dried and he's just walked in, past the clean litter tray and pissed in the bed while looking directly at me!

Keep him out of the bedroom?

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 14/02/2024 07:15

For now, you need to stop letting him in the bedroom.

His behaviour is classic scent-marking - hardly surprising given his age and the fact that he's not neutered.

He should calm down once he's been down.

Our female cat did this once and we now only let her in the bedroom if she’s supervised. She’s been fixed and she uses her tray otherwise. If you can, keep him out. I’m just paranoid she will do it on our sofa now! Eeeek! Can’t wait for her to go outside as she’s really wanting to go out to explore.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 14/02/2024 12:19

It should stop after neutering because his urge to roam won’t be as strong.

Can you make a catio or take him out on a lead after he’s been done?

Unhappy cats wee in the house unfortunately and he’ll have a strong urge to find females.

There's no safe outside space and I can't add any. 😔 He's not unhappy, it's more like he's claiming the bed as his?

I do shut him out overnight (has access to the kitchen/hall and a lovely snuggly bed) but he gets really upset if he can't get in!

No, he's not 'claiming it as his'. Cats don't pee to do that, they spray - two totally different things. If he's not ill, he's stressed about something. What litter do you use?

IroningThrone · 14/02/2024 20:03

I have used everything from cheap clay to wood to paper to even straw pellets. He likes the paper best.

Will he be going out once he’s done?

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/02/2024 20:05

Try the corn based litter from Amazon, it’s brilliant! Perfect clumping so works out really cheap, we have 4 and they all love it.
(nope, don’t work for Amazon 😄)

Canthave2manycats · 14/02/2024 20:06

Keep him out of your room until he's neutered. Fingers crossed that will fix it.

Maybe he would benefit from a companion, if that was an option?

Wanttobeok · 14/02/2024 20:06

Ours did this.

It should get better after he is neutered but also get one-of those plug ins to calm him

gamerchick · 14/02/2024 20:07

Let him get upset. It's tough titty. You need to keep him out to try and lose the habit.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 14/02/2024 20:23

Generally speaking, neutered cats who are confident and secure in their territories don't feel the need to urinate in order to mark their scent.

So, while your cats' issues could be down to the fact that he's still entire, it could also be because he's not feeling particularly confident in himself for some reason.

One of mine (neutered male) has scent-marked by our back window a few times - and we finally figured out it was because a neighbours' cat was coming and sitting on the windowsill and making him feel threatened. He's nervous anyway but that really didn't help him.

We cat-proofed the garden to stop the cat being able to get in and he's never done it again.

I'd also think about "catification" and how well set-up your home is for an indoor cat. Does he have plenty of cat furniture, scratching posts, beds and boxes etc. that he can lie in and spend time in? Does he have toys, blankets etc. that carry his scent to help boost his confidence and make him feel like the house is really "his"?

Jackson Galaxy has some great tips if you can get past his slightly OTT style. He really does know what he's talking about.

Will he be going out once he’s done?

No. It's not a safe area for a cat to go out.

Forgot to say I also have a plug in in my bedroom and the living room - it had made zero difference!
