Help with possible diagnosis

Currently scratching my head along with the vets to work out what the issue maybe....i wonder if the world of MN wisdom could shed some light.

I have a 10 year old moggy tortie who is a house cat, by her own choice, and has always been well but also very aloof with anyone apart from me. She has 2 litter trays in the house (she likes to go in private) and has always since a kitten been fed on 1/2 pouch in morning and 1/2 pouch in evening and grazes on biscuits regularly topped up. Water renewed daily by rarely touched.

The pass month/6 weeks we have seen big changes in her

Become very friendly and cuddly to all in house, including the toddler (unheard of!)
Will now sit downstairs opposite the dog happily, could never manage anything closer than 5 meters before
Screams and screams for food, we are hitting 5+ pouches a day and she could eat more
wee and poop normal, just more of it.
lost a lot of weight, was 4kg now sitting around 3.1kg
fur has gone scraggy and bald patch by base of her tail

The vets have done a full blood test and ruled out diabetes, parasites, fleas and worms. Possibility of Thyroid but 2 t4 tests and they are showing top end of normal range. We are now waiting on a 3rd t3 test to be 100% on thyroid.

Any suggestions or has anyone else had this happen to their mogs?

I would bet on it being her thyroid. She's showing every single sign going.

Just because her tests are top range of normal, doesn't mean she wouldn't benefit (hugely) from medication.

I would also say thyroid

Crazyone84 - Out of interest same test advised for my elderly cat who is always starving despite eating loads and losing weight. The test is geriatric including T4 ( IIdex) GERTIN and I have been quoted £222. Does this seem excessive I wonder?

Crazyone84 · 06/02/2024 20:26

I'm almost certain it's thyroid but vet doesn't seem to want to say this which is throwing my thoughts off to what else it could be

@crimsonlake the first all round test was £190 odd, then just the t4 2nd time was £69 but that was with a nurse so no vet consultation fee. Now this advanced t3 test is £147. So possibly in the right, hope that helps

@lifeispainauchocolat have you had experience with high "normal" testing but still medication?

Crazyone - thanks for that. Looking at the bill in it's entirety its £267 including consultation. Good luck with your cat.

lifeispainauchocolat · 07/02/2024 16:43

Not with my own cat @Crazyone84 but I work as a pet-sitter and it happened with a clients' boy. He was much older than yours but showed all the classic symptoms. He's 20 now and has thyronorm everyday even though his levels showed as "normal" originally.

Basically, his owner insisted that something was done as his behaviour was becoming unbearable. He went back to "normal" and is thriving now :)

thank you for all the help and tips.

Keep us update on how you get on, mine gets his blood test tomorrow.

Clarich007 · 08/02/2024 20:45

My cat had all the same symptoms at age 16.
She was so thin, and eating all day.
It was her thyroid, put on tablets and she was like a new cat.
She put weight on went back to eating normally, and lived to be 20 despite being the runt of the litter.
Hope your cat us better soon.

Have her checked for pancreas insufficiency and/or diabetes. The test for pancreas insufficiency will need to be done in the morning because your cat will need to have an empty stomach.
