Changing insurers on an older cat

I have two cats ages 11 and 14. We are still insured by the company we chose when they were kittens and have been lucky over the years not using it much. Recently poor 14yr old cat had some investigations which turned out to be nothing, but current insurer has paid out less than half the bill.

Im considering changing the company, can I do that? Any recommendations or anything I should know? Thanks

I think you might find it hard and expensive to change insurers for an older cat with preexisting health investigations.

I never had to pay a proportion of the final bill before. Because cheddar is on an
Old policy, I don't need to pay it. But when I added Penelope on, I will have to pay 20% when she turns 8.

Thanks. Looks like it’s a standard thing to pay a percentage on top once cats are older, but most policies are 20% and mine is 35%! I’ll do more research

If you change providers they will exclude any pre-existing conditions & I would have thought it unlikely you could get new insurance for an older cat. Ours costs us a fortune for our 15 year old cat, but he does have cardiomyopathy & thyroid problems. I think we pay the excess plus a percentage, but I'm not sure! I know he costs us quite a lot of money.

I really wouldn't try and change insurers now.

You may not even find it possible to get coverage for a 14 year old, and remember every single thing you've ever seen the vet for over her lifetime will be excluded from your new policy too.

Wish Id looked into insurance years ago. Will try to up the cover with our current provider and see if that helps at all!

Insurance I’ve come across is usually for cats 10 years or younger and as PP have said exclude pre existing conditions

I'm with PetPlan think I pay the excess plus 20% on the older cat because she's now over 12. When I looked at switching no one would touch her because she's classed as elderly. Most of my cats have lived to 19/20 in perfect health so I struggle seeing 12 as old but insurers do.
