Our cat is now 15 and over the past 18 months or so has become extremely desperate for affection. He will climb all over me meowing quite loudly, when I give him fuss he never seems satisfied and will push constantly in to my hand. He is also far more vocal and will often 'shout' loudly for no apparent reason. He was never a particularly affectionate or noisy cat before but assuming it's an age thing?

He has been to the vet and had full blood profile which came back good...
I am pretty sure he's gone fairly deaf which is probably a factor. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same?

My 18 year old cat is a lot more “vocal” than she used to be and slightly more affectionate (she was always quite aloof). She tends to miaow until we reply. She especially does it in the dark and is quieter by day.

It’s good that you’ve had the vet check up.

I've noticed this about our cat too. She was always affectionate and quite demanding but recently it has reached a new level. She's not allowed in our bedrooms and has taken to miaowing very very loudly every morning at the crack of Dawn until someone gets up and I mean very loudly! We're early risers anyway usually 5.45/6am. The noise she makes is unbelievable we thought there was something wrong but no she just wants us up. Throughout the day if you sit down she's on your lap or if we're doing something else she's around our legs as she wants us to sit down so she can have a lap to sleep in. She has also refused to go into her bed and no longer sleeps in it.

My parents and friends cats have gone very vocal as they get older. Both vet checked and in good health. They are so loud!

Thanks for the replies sounds like it may be a fairly normal old cat behaviour. It would be fine if he would settle on a knee when we sit down but he's constantly up and down kneading. He's also taken to just walking over the top of the dogs if they happen to be in his path, one of which isn't too happy unsurprisingly! He actually went to the vets for a severe flea allergy , something else we have never had an issue with but thankfully that's sorted now. He's underweight but doesn't have a massive appetite anymore so it's hard to get food in to him but he's looking a lot better since the allergy has been sorted.

My cat is coming up to 19, he has been like this for around the last 4 years. I took him to the vet and they found nothing wrong with him. It drives me mad at times, particularly as he is worse at night and often wakes me up at silly o'clock screeching, it's a horrible sound - similar to a baby crying.

I've put it down to some sort of cognitive decline. He is hard of hearing now and his eyesight is poor. I wonder if he just gets disorientated and cries for attention and reassurance. He usually is better after receiving some mummy love.

Also, he has become 'unclean'. He no longer goes out to do his business and although I have 2 litter trays he will still sometimes wee in random places.
