Help! Stray cat stuck in our garage!

Long story short we have a stray Tom cat who has ensconced himself high up in the corner of our garage. We can't reach him and every time we get near there is a lot of hissing and growling. We have tried spraying water at him but no luck. The garage now stinks and he has been there for three days. We left the garage door open for about 6 hours on Saturday and thought he was gone, but we have just discovered him still there. Any ideas please gratefully received. Thank you.

Put some food just outside the door to tempt him out?
Seriously though, if he’s stuck in your garage he is going to be suffering badly very soon if he doesn’t have access to food or water.

MrsCat1 · 28/01/2024 16:25

We've put some food a metre away from him. All garage doors wide open.

He's frightened, cold and in need of a caring home - so you sprayed water at him?

Leave some food there, go back into your warm house, let him come out when he feels safe

AlisonDonut · 28/01/2024 16:26

Put some food in the garage and stop spraying him with water.

Scampuss · 28/01/2024 16:27

Have you contacted a local rescue yet? It's quite possible he's injured, hence holing up and hiding away.

And why on earth are you spraying him? That's just cruel.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2024 16:27

Stick a message on your local Facebook group saying you’ve got an angry lost cat in your garage, I’d presume someone’s been looking for it.
Or stick up a couple of notes on some lampposts.

sleekcat · 28/01/2024 16:28

Is it possible he left during the 6 hours and later returned? I would say something is wrong with him if he hasn't moved at all and he might need a vet.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2024 16:28

Sorry, totally missed the bit where you said it was a stray, ignore me! I get really pissed off when people don’t read the op properly and I’ve just done it myself 😂

MrsCat1 · 28/01/2024 16:33

Thanks. He is in good health. I have been in touch with a rescue and they say to put food out and leave the doors open. Would like to be able to take him to a rescue but at the moment there is no way he is co-operating. He is definitely a stray.

Perhaps check the garage regularly in the evening? My cat barely moves during the day but is obsessed with going out around 6/7 pm because he loves hunting, and he will stay out until quite late if it's not freezing.

Scampuss · 28/01/2024 16:41

You can't possibly know he's in good health if you can't get near him. He needs to be trapped and taken to the vet.

urbanbuddha · 28/01/2024 16:42

Leave him a bowl of water too.
If he’s definitely not injured it sounds like he might have been chased. Don’t spray him - that’ll just scare him more.

SoIRejoined · 28/01/2024 16:43

Are you sure he can get down? If he's injured he might be stuck. Can you put something for him to climb down easily?

MrsCat1 · 28/01/2024 16:50

I'm pretty sure he is not injured and he can definitely get down. Yes he could have been chased. I've seen him around here on and off for a while. He sometimes attacks our cats. Our cats have bern to the vets 5 times in the last few months with injuries, so I'm not keen on a new resident.

Well it’s not his fault he’s homeless and intact a human let him down for this to happen.

I can’t believe you sprayed water at him either if you’ve got pet cats it’s by the grace of god yours got an owner who cared for them.

catelynjane · 29/01/2024 09:07

You need to contact a cat charity and get them to trap him so that he can be assessed by a vet.

If he's a stray they can neuter him and either find him a home or release him as part of a TNR programme.

MrsCat1 · 29/01/2024 09:15

Thanks all. At about 7pm last night he ambled out, having eaten the food and seemingly without a care in the world (we set up a camera to observe). I have contacted a rescue charity and hope he can be trapped and then neutered. As I said our own cats have been attacked by him multiple times so I really don't want him around. Five visits to the vets in recent months plus one cat who now has stress cystitis is enough.
