Litter causing itching, recommendations for a new one please?

It's not just Fatty that is scratching, it's me as well. I neeed a fine scooping litter and I think I have tried them all in the search for one that is fine enough otherwise she balances on the edge of the tray. Not I have another problem to resolve.

It is either the little green balls (Cats Best Sensitive), the stuff they add to make it clump, or dust, or all of them. I have used clumping litter for years and never had this before, mostly Cats Best original which didn't work for Her Highness.

Not a fan of Worlds Best due to having a huge bag that stank to high heaven before it got to the tray, think it was faulty.

I don't use clay due to it clumping inside the cat if licked off the fur among other reasons.

If you use paper litter, how do you find it? I tried it once and it went everywhere, couldn't find waste in it.

Any suggestions for a fine, non-irritating litter please?

We use a paper one and yes it does track , but I just sweep it up.
I used to use a wood one, but found it smelled with even a tiny wee!
It gets changed a couple of times a week and poos removed as soon as we can.
Is 'fine scooping' litter one where the wee makes it clump so you can scoop it out? I wouldn't be keen on using something chemical like that, due to dcat having sensitive parts ( history of utis and overgrooming) not to mention worrying about the environmental impact.

hexsnidgett · 25/01/2024 10:50

Bio catelet I think it's called.

I am not bothered about tracking, it goes everywhere regardless of what it is.

I have always used clumping litter, some of them are a bit crunchy and she isn't keen on putting her paws in it so balances on the edges of the tray. I tried all the ones that looked OK and were unperfumed. They were mostly crunchy.

Corn litter seems to smell, at least Worlds Best did. It is fine/soft on paws. So is the Cats Best sensitive but for some reason it has little green balls in it. She is using it OK. It is very dusty, to the extent it makes me cough if I get too close when scooping. It is wood based, or was, anything is possible now as manufacturers keep messing with stuff.

I just looked at Bio Catelet (I tried Breeder Celect or whatever it is called and it was awful). One thing I am not sure about with Bio Catelet is this:
Built in winter and summer perfumes
Contains a flea deterrent (veg based)

How do you get the wees out? Can you find it in the tray?

I use Intersand, it is clay-y but I've never had it stick to a cat! It is fine, soft, doesn't smell and lasts forever.

Moier · 25/01/2024 12:10

I use a sifting cat litter box.
For use with wood pellets only.. when he's done his wees.. he scratched to cover it up and it all turns to sawdust and so it sifts into the bottom tray as he does it.. leaving only dry pellets on top.. hence he doesn't get his pee back on him to cause any irritation next time he goes. Its always clean and doesn't smell unless he does a poo.. which l just scoop out into a nappy bag and put in outside bin.
You hardly use any pellets and bottom tray only needs changing once a week .
It's a game changer.

I like Bio Catolet. It looks to me like recycled newspaper pellets which sort of change texture in the corner my two cats wee in, so easy enough to scoop out. It doesn't smell and the bags are quite light.

It sticks on the inside, when swallowed. If they swallow a fair amount, plus fur it can clog them up, especially kittens.

I won't use anything like clay for that reason. It gets on the fur and paws, they wash, some of it must get swallowed. OK in a large cat as long as they aren't prone to fur blockages or have megacolon, but in a little cat or one with poor digestion it can cause havoc. It doesn't pass through like the wood based stuff.

Another recommend for Bio Catolet, I changed from wood based ones because of the appalling smell when peed on.
A word of warning though. Sometimes there are red bits in the litter fresh out of the packet. I hadn't realised they were like that in the packet and took Baby Girl to vet thinking she had a UTI. Only after spending £££ did I realise it came out of the packet that way.

We use Tigerino rose/ lavender, lasts ages, no problems for cat...
https://www.zooplus.co.uk/search/results?q=tigerino%20rose%20cat%20litter

Thank you, I don't use smelly perfumes though, we both have allergies and perfumed litter is not going to be useful. I used to use the unperfumed Tigerino for one of my cats (the crystal stuff) and the dust was terrible. His breathing suffered from inhaling it.

I have thought about those trays. But not with pellets as she hates hard litter. I tried it as I had some already but she wasn't amused. It needs to be soft before she uses it or she holds on as long as she can.

Best litter we have used is this brand.

I use this for our cat. It clumps really well, covers smells well, when she covers her poos that is, which is very rare.
Greenwood's clumping cat litter

I used to like Greenwoods, it seems to have changed in the last year or so and is a bit too crunchy. She really likes the soft, messy, tracks everywhere stuff, like the dreaded Worlds Best.

I looked at getting it again but I think it was that one, didn't say what it's made of or didn't at the time. I used to use it with Cats Best original, it was the hardest of the two.

catelynjane · 25/01/2024 14:26

Another recommendation for Greenwoods - we use it for our three indoor cats and it's been great. No smell, clumps really well and lasts forever. It's also soft on the paws - I have a kitten, a fussy adult and an arthritic older boy and it suits them all really well.

RestingCatsArseFace · 25/01/2024 14:29

At this point I will say thank you to everyone, so far. Please don't stop, I need all the help I can get, she holds on for ages if she doesn't like the litter, and then spreads her paws out along the rim of the tray to avoid standing in the nasty sharp bits which she thinks I put in there on purpose.

She even does it with the soft stuff, just not as much.

As she is prone to constipation, I prefer her not to hold on.

Sounds weird, but have you tried soil?

Of course it shouldn't be used for kittens, but I've always used clay litters (back in the day the only real option was fullers earth litter) and never had any problems.

hexsnidgett · 25/01/2024 17:35

I will admit to letting the wee sit- she is small and prefers to go outside when she can. I don't notice a smell and it's in the kitchen.
When she has catflap access-months can go by without her using the tray.
If your cat is indoors only you will have different requirements.

I have not seen this on the bio catelet Built in winter and summer perfumes
Contains a flea deterrent (veg based)

I will have look later. I have been buying it for about 14 years! So no longer read the packet.

I haven't yet but was thinking about it, put off by not knowing if she had used it though. Tried it with a previous cat with constipation issues and it didn't work.

It should be OK in a healthy cat, but trying to scrape it off the litter tray the one time I had to get emergency litter for a rescue cat put me off for life. It wouldn't shift. Wouldn't want a cat swallowing that, even a little bit.

I have some different litter arriving, think it was OK before but a bit less soft. If it isn't any good I will look closer at the Bio catolit, just a bit concerned about the above mentioned.

I found it on here https://biocatolet.co.uk/

The bag doesn't say anything about perfume and it doesn't smell.Confused
The insect repellent aspect is mystery, it says its veg based, so could be an essential oil or something?

Citronella is a repellent, I think it is toxic for cats though. It would smell. I did check the photos on one of the listings for ingredients and noticed there isn't much on there.

Marigolds are meant to be insect repellents when planted with other plants, I can't see a litter company adding flowers to litter though.

Chrysanthemums are used in flea killers, listed as pyrethrins so maybe that. I am a bit wary of using a flea killer long term and would like to know what they use.

tis a mystery...
