Girl cat and peeing

Girl cat has always had a "sensitive bladder", any stressful situation and she reacts by peeing outside her tray.

We had new flooring fitted right after Christmas and I anticipated the protest peeing but it's not really stopped.

I eventually took her to the vets and she got checked out and they gave her anti inflammatorys and a clean bill of health but even after 5 days of the medicine she's still protest peeing in the same spot in the bathroom sporadically every few days.

I've cleaned thoroughly each time and used an anti urine spray on the spot. I've tried putting down tin foil but she peed beside it. Putting down food in the spot but she still peed there anyway.

I can't block her out of the bathroom because one of their litter trays is in there. I have 2 cats and 3 trays already. She's still using the litter trays but overnight or when I'm out she will pee on the bathroom floor. Not every day, just randomly every second or third day.

Any tips to deter this?

Does she feel intimidated by one of the other cats, maybe when you are out of the house? My girl is bullied by one of my boys so doesn’t feel safe in the utility room where the litter trays are. I’ve had to put more trays in a different place.

It’s also compounded by being arthritic and not liking to balance/stand on litter so she uses empty trays which have to be washed after every use (and they stand on a towel to catch any wet footprints). It’s a bit of extra work but better than the risk of damage to the floor - and it saves loads in cat litter costs!

Is she on any supplements for bladder health? Cystease and D-Mannose are both natural and can be used together.

Thanks for the replies

It's just boy cat and girl cat. They give as good as they get to each other, boy cat sleeps in my daughter's room at night so he's definitely not interfering with her using the tray.

She used to be on Cystease but she started refusing her food it was added to. I was mixing it with water and syringing it but her vet nurse said the danger of aspiration outweighed any good it would be doing.

And no arthritis, she's only 5. And she uses the trays the majority of the time without any issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

A lot of Feliway all over the house.

Feed as much wet food as possible. We also give cat milk to try to up the daily fluids.

Restart the Metacam whenever the peeing restarts for at least a week if not longer.

And a regular urinary supplement - our vet sold us Vetpro Urinary. We thought it was a bit pointless and expensive but as soon as we stopped the weeing came back.

Cat doesn't seem to mind eating it sprinkled on her food but this is a cat who will eat anything so she isn't especially discerning.

My other tip is to try to get the cat's brain working on things other than being anxious. Mine would happily be an indoor cat but even 5 minutes chucked out the back door to do sniffing and watching gives her far more stimulation than her preferred activity of lying under a duvet being aggressive. Jackson Galaxy videos were really helpful on how to play better and general up the cat stimulation at home.

From what I’ve read, there are so many instances of cats peeing where they shouldn’t because of stress of some description so even if it looks like she is giving as good as she gets, she might be feeling there might be an imbalance with the boy. Alternatively, is there a cat that she can smell outside?

I’ve used this gel to help with a cystitis flare up in the past, and this food to help manage a longer term problem with another cat. There is a wet version too. As well as Feliway, there are some other things I’ve used with our cats to try to bring stress levels down: Pet Remedy, Dorwest drops, and Bach Flower Remedies. I’ve seen TherapetMD adverts recently but not tried it.

I hope you manage to find something that works, it’s really distressing to constantly be wondering when she’s going to strike next time.

You can give Cystease as a full tablet - the same with D-Mannose. I just give them whole to my cat every morning.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have 2 Feliway going, in a third floor flat so no other cats she comes across.

I didn't know cystese could be given while so that's something I can try. I'll also go back to taking her outside for a walk, we go out in summer months but she hates the wet and cold. I'll even take her to the door just so she can sniff and feel the wind.

I'll head to Pets at Home after work to get the calming dry food and that gel too hopefully

I'll also reintroduce the YuMove hopefully and restart the anti inflammatory medication too

Thank you everyone

Don't want to talk too soon but hopefully Girl Cat is on the mend 🤞🏼

I got her the urinary health dry cat food and she's been eating that really happily ... with boy cat stealing some too! She's also been on YuMove via syringe since Monday and the anti inflammatories since Monday too. Also bought that gel @Theforeverhome recommended so she's had a squirt of that on her paw to deal with too!

Lastly I've been spraying Feliway Happy Cat on the area of the bathroom she had been peeing and of course cleaned the area thoroughly and repeatedly and applied a urine breakdown spray.

Also being taking her out each morning (although we only get as far as the back door because she operant like the rain) and doing 2 big active play sessions a day too.

Not sure which if any had done the trick or if it's a combination of all but that's been 2 days and 2 nights of no peeing on the floor and best of all she came and slept on my bed the entirety of last night which was her usual practice but she hasn't been doing since she got ill.

I'll keep up the anti inflammatory for the rest of the week and the gel too and I'm going to keep the YuMove going permanently to hopefully keep any future flare ups at bay.

Thank you all for the advice, here's Girl Cat photo for tax 😊
