Miaowing

I often read that cats don’t communicate with each other by miaowing, that this vocalisation is for us. But my cat has a friend who comes round and they make little noises at each other. Maybe not a full on miaow but they are verbally communicating, as well as rubbing noses and trying to sniff each other’s back ends.

If you have more than one cat, or your cat has a friend like mine, do they ever communicate verbally with each other?

When I lived in a previous place my cat had a 'friend' who came into the garden. He couldn't get to that side of the house but could get onto a balcony, so he'd crane his neck off the balcony and she'd jump up on the garden table and they'd croon at each other like a reverse Romeo and Juliet Grin

My old girl Posey had a lovely little cat friend at one house we lived in. He would come and call for her at the cat flap or window and they’d chirrup away together outside in the garden.

My boy cat will come inside and howl to declare that he has survived his long trek outside, and then walk around yelling to make sure everyone knows. His sister doesn't not acknowledge this, at all. He finds this confusing. He'll go around looking for her and she just retreats into the sofa cushions with a "fuck off, you overexpressive knobhead" expression on her little face.

My noisy boy will miaow randomly and it's hard to say whether it's aimed at me, my girl cat or just him expressing something to himself.

One of our girls chirrups, never heard another cat make the same sound.

OiGetOff · 14/01/2024 13:44

Both my M and F kittens chirrup quite a lot, to us and to each other. I think it’s rather lovely. We (humans) also get miaows.

I swear I’ve just seen M kitten ask if he can join his sister on the comfiest bit of the cat tree, and she said yes. Done by a chirrup which went up at the end (so a question), then a quick yes back.

Our cat is a very chirpy cat but she also miaow when she wants or is unhappy about something.

She's like an alarm clock, just 10 minutes ago she got off the sofa amd miaowed at us as if to announce it's her dinner time now, and one of us needs to feed her!

She doesn't really purr though.

catelynjane · 14/01/2024 17:37

Two of ours are really vocal but more towards humans than other cats. The third only talks when he's hungry and thinks his dinner is late Grin

I've got one who chirrups at other cats, birds outside and us. I've got one who is a drama llama yeller. Then my big tabby will miaow when he sees his food coming. The others are pretty much silent.

Our previous black and white cat used to chatter at the birds and sound like he was muttering under his breath when in the huse with us.

We got an orange cat - he screams at anything and anything. he comes in and screams to tell us, he wants to go out - he screams, happy - screams, annoyed - screams.

He has been to the vet ( screamed at dogs in the waiting room, screamed at the vet, screamed at the vet nurse) vet says he is just VOCAL.

Our cats are sisters and only hiss at each other. They do miaow at us when they want attention/feeding or make a chattering sound when they want to catch a bird. My mum's old cat was half Siamese and they're supposed to be the most vocal.

I have a screaming orange cat too. Everything and nothing elicits the scream. Along with copious chirrups and soft miaows when in a more restful state. I don't know if the screams are for me or for her (no other cats) as she doesn't look at me. I'm curious whether she does it when I'm not in the house.

I never knew cats could be that vocal, I thought there was something wrong with her when I first got her from the rescue (where she was nervously silent). But no, just vocal.

We just have one cat and she is very chatty. She speaks to you when you come into a room, and when her food’s being prepped it’s a full blown symphony - tonight I was making a tuna sandwich for work tomorrow and she was spinning in circles while shouting at me, like a circus cat. When we come in from work she’s at the front door, screeching at us because she wants fed.

My favourite noise is the ak-ak-ak she does at birds. She can be lying sleeping in the garden in the sun and suddenly starts it out of the blue because she sees pigeons on roof.

FayCarew · 15/01/2024 21:07

My cats chirrup. Miaowing is usually if they want something, but they rarely do it. Previous cat was very miaowy.

twobluechickens · 16/01/2024 07:26

Mine miaows when her food bowl is heading towards her. She will occasionally miaow or chirrup at me if she wants some fuss. Other than that she's very quiet. My previous cat used to announce his return loudly. Current one purrs like mad when she's being stroked or brushed.
