We lost our boy tonight, I’m completely heartbroken. He has been ill for a long time and the vet said they couldn’t do anything more to help him or make him comfortable and that it would be a kindness to let him go, so we did. I am beside myself, doesn’t feel like home without him. My husband and I got him at 8weeks old 13 years ago, not long after we first moved in together. He changed us from a couple to a family. Can’t believe he’s gone.

3 years since he was killed on our driveway due to incompetent person walking a dog.

Still so desperately missed, he was a really special boy amongst our furry gang of the past and present.

😢

Oh bless you all, particularly the recently bereaved. Our VERY stupid and very beautiful little snow leopard wishes she could be there for a little purr and stroke. As I say weirdly frequently, it weirdly is just the stereotypical sharp scratch and then they get a nice sleep and release from pain.

We lost Evie 16 (tabby) and Reuben 5 (grey/white) in May 2023 5 days apart
Finlay 6 months old tomorrow came along recently and stole our hearts - he’s all grey
Its so hard losing them - huge sympathies to everyone - especially those whose Dcat died or was PTS recently

So many beautiful cats and moving heartfelt stories, one thing that comes across to me is how many cats were peoples' shadows, certainly my beloved Pud was mine and photobombed so many pictures! Yet there seems to be a perception that cats are aloof, seek what they want only when they want it and are plotting to kill us all in between times!
But even those sort are sorely missed. They really do get under our skins and into our hearts. Sending unMumsnetty hugs to all who have lost their loves 💐

Oh thank the LORD I know of Finlay from other threads and thought he’d been PTS. And with the background of other lost friends.

We lost our DBoycat July 2022 to cancer and I still miss him terribly. He was 17 and such a character.

Just prior to this our DGirlcat went missing and we haven't found her. I just don't think I'm ever going to get over losing both of them.

We rescued DGirlcat2 and she's brought us so much joy. But I think all the time how much the other two would have loved her and it would help her.

They are family.

So lonesome for furry cuddles. It’s lovely reading about these beautiful endings but ours wasn’t like that. He reacted very badly to the injection, appeared to be in a lot of pain and distress and fought ferociously to the very end. I still feel terribly guilty, for not realising how sick he was, and for what I was unwittingly party to at the end.

missmodular2 · 13/01/2024 09:01

Oh no @Nonplusultra that sounds awful. Try not to feel guilty, you can't know these thing in advance. We had something similar in the final moments - he fought having the canula put in and had to be sedated - and then I thought it would be a gradual falling asleep - but as soon as the injection went in his head flopped like he'd been hit with a hammer. Unfortunately it's a memory I'll find hard to forget 😥

I lost my gorgeous boy at the end of September - hit on the road. We have fields and fields behind us, and I hate the fact that he was tempted to go out on the road!
I miss him awfully.
We’ve since got a puppy - DH and DD’s ambition for a long time - and though she is lovely, I am very much a cat person, and I miss my gorgeous fluffball so much.

So sorry for all your losses. We lost our first cat more than 20 years ago. She was getting on in years a bit, but seemed fit and well. She was found dead - still warm, curled up in her favourite sleeping drawer under my son's bed. We buried her in the garden, so my now grown up kids say we can never move, unless we dig her up and take her with us! We all have fond memories of her and even now miss her. But better to have loved and lost and all that.

Oh you poor things. There’s a general agreement among horse vets - I was training to be one before I switched to law so had to get the work experience in - that shooting is kinder because sometimes the injection doesn’t work as intended. But unfortunately shooting a cat would put the surgery out of business for at least a day and be incredibly traumatic for the owner and probably the vets. If it helps, I can analogise via my extensive history at the local general hospital. I’ve had a fair few cannulations and if they’re putting something in like potassium or pabrinex and the cannula is slightly misplaced it’s intensely painful for just a few seconds. With pets it’s the same but instead of shouting for a doctor the end result is well, an end to pain.

So sorry @CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau didnt mean to scare you!
Finlay had his own update thread yesterday and is doing so well

BTW I have a relevant anecdote for this one too. He was cold and rigid but my nana who had buried sixteen cats at that point rang up to ask if I (vet student at the time) could check if he was alive. He was very obviously not but his little curled up body made him seem like he was at peace to the point that when our previous cat was PTS I carried his warm body home in a towel and arranged him in the same position (there was a burial ceremony afterwards which got a touch ridiculous - friendly builders and a JCB involved and by that time the cat was as stiff as a board and I am clumsy. No further details forthcoming).
I have huge sympathy for those who have lost furry friends recently. There is actually a body of academic research supporting the idea that pet bereavement is equivalent to human bereavement and while I was at a conference and heard that I actually had to excuse myself because I was about to burst into tears about my horses (our current cat is MY baby, my horses were MINE), other cats were super sad but there’s a marked difference between essentially a furred son/daughter and a huge friend of other family members. And someone finally validated how I’d felt when someone I was in a parental position in relation to was led off and shot behind my back. And all grief is near-unbearable and takes time. Sending love to everyone

I'm the same isn't it strange. I think the brain must connect things we do and their routines. I'm sure I can hear her claws coming down the hall.

Lost my beautiful boy on 20th December. He was 18 and I'd had him since he was 8 weeks old. He'd been fine and I came downstairs that morning to find him collapsed on the kitchen floor. I just knew it was the end somehow and the vet confirmed. He went peacefully on my knee. He is still everywhere in the house.
