Kitten jumping up when we eat!

Got a 5 month old kitten this week. All ok but when we eat anything she runs over and jumps up. Also jumps on dining table to sniff food as well as kitchen counters. What is the best way to nip this in the bud? I appreciate it's a cat and curious and instinctively likes to jump!

Try screaming 'get down you little bastard!' and waving your arms around, that's what I do.

Mine ignores that.
I think he thinks his name is Tennysondontdothat.

Cats will cat. It’s what they do. Cat law. Live with it :) cats just don’t care :)

I feel a bit mean doing this and admit I have let my cat drink out of my many water glasses several times (I have the choice of a neighbouring bed or a radiator and have been told I’ll be evicted if the water glasses go on the radiator, so when we have morning inspection noses get stuck in the glasses). If there’s somewhere they really shouldn’t go (meal table) a very firm NO with a lift down repetitively until they get the idea will eventually work. And when I say NO I mean not a scary shout but a slightly raised voice they can’t pretend not to understand. Ours hates being lifted so it has extra weight with her. You could also try the route of positive reinforcement if they’re in the floor (toys, treats, fuss) and just ignoring apart from lifting the food away if they do jump up, particularly if they’re baby kittens.

Hissing at them did the job for me too.

Little Tennyson after being hissed at 😁

Mine has never jumped onto the counters but has been known to jump on the table. She gets chucked off. I love cats but I won’t tolerate them where food is as they are not the most hygienic.

Does your cat not go in the kitchen when you’re not watching? If they do I can almost guarantee that they DO go on the counters. Just not when you’re there!
I shout and make a psht noise when if catch her. It mostly works. Or I have to just pick her up and dump her back on the floor.
She doesn’t jump up when we’re actually sat down eating.

Isn't that what cleaning products are for? Wink

I give these two a boop on the nose, several kisses on the head, and an " aren't you the cutest naughty cats ever." Lecture.

So far I have been in no way effective.

I wipe the surfaces and tables just before I use them because I know Haribo has either walked over them or sat on the table beforehand.

You clap your hands and say “get down”. After about six years you will get tired of it and your cat will be free to sit where he wants.

😂😂😂😂

Just shrieked with laughter at this one!!

I just used to swipe mine off the table. They learn fast.

Keeping them off the table/worktops all the time is another matter. It can be done with a Cat Ssscat which senses motion and gives a puff of air at them. Worked in 2 puffs with one cat.

But I now have a cat who goes absolutely everywhere - we gave up. However even he doesn't come up when we are eating so maybe we did train him a bit.

FruitcakeandCheeses · 23/01/2024 12:38

When we had a new kitchen fitted we had room for a small single cupboard with a counter top, we made that the cats area and she has her food and water on there. We also put small tidbits from our plates. She then sits and surveys us her minions. They like being high up. She is now a curmudgeonly old bat so has taken to sometimes sitting on the spare chair at the table and glaring at us with venom so we have after many years given in and out a tidbit there which she then knocks off with her paw on to the floor to eat.

Closed door is the only one I have ever known to be effective.
