Kitten vests

Hello
kitten is being "fixed" on Monday. We got her a vest as we have 2 other cats and don't want them picking at her stitches, as well as stopping her doing the same. She will be kept separate until she is healed, but we tried the vest on her and she hated it! Refused to move! Any advice? Would a doughnut be better?

If you're keeping her separate then you don't really need to worry about the other cats picking at the stitches!

Mine was spayed in rescue so I have no idea how they manage it, but she had minor surgery last year and I stuck with a traditional cone attached with a quick release collar. I bought 3 different soft alternatives and wasn't happy with any of them safety-wise.

Good luck

6m old spayed last month, cone of shame initially which left her vulnerable to attacks from her mum. Suit? Wouldn’t move at first, then managed to get it off consistently within 5 minutes

Gave up in the end. She was fine

I've never found it necessary. Certainly don't want to put her into something that causes her stress unless it's absolutely necessary. Ask your vet in advance?

We got a 'onesie' from the vet when our cat was spayed. I think we persevered with putting her in it the first day but she kept getting out of it so the next day we left it off and she was fine and her kitten (we rehomed them together) never bothered with her stitches.

We had our three kittens all spayed at the same time. They wriggled out of their vests within 2 minutes of getting them home. After an initial panic, we put them in one room together and kept them calm and they never touched their own or each other's stitches. We're really glad we didn't bother persevering with the vests as they found them very stressful. You may find them completely unnecessary so keep an eye out to see if your kitten even needs it.

We got onsies from the vets when we had our girls done. Velcro (black one) got on with it fine. Jemima mainly refused to move. Ended up wearing her for a fortnight in a back to front hoodie.

Our girl wouldn’t move in her suit and then acted like she’d had a stroke so we took the suit off and she promptly fiddled with her stitches and had to go back to the vet . We put the suit back on and after the initial few minutes she was running about perfectly in it .

My little girl perfected getting her vest off to a fine art in 12 seconds. Gave up.

My three year old was spayed recently. (Newly adopted) she didn't tolerate a cone, the smallest vest was to big. And she refused to walk in it, and an inflatable collar was too big. So I gave up
And she left it alone.

We had a spayed female around two other cats and none of them bothered her wounds. We never kept her separate either.

We got dcat when she was 2 and had her spayed a few months later. She hated the suit. She wouldn’t walk in it or walked as if she were doing dressage. We tried a cone but she got so tangled up in it that it cut the back of her neck. We took the suit off and she didn’t bother with the stitches but went back to her usual jumping and climbing all over the room. Unfortunately her inside stitches burst and she developed a hernia and had to go back for more surgery. So it was suit back on and one of us staying up with her each night. I’m dreading getting dkitten done.

I've had 5 girl cats in total, and none of them have been a problem after being spayed.
No cone or body suits. They all left their stitches alone apart from gently licking when they were washing.
I think it would probably be more stressful forcing them to wear them.

CurlewKate · 06/01/2024 08:32

I think that many vets don't bother with anything nowadays. We were told to keep ours separate while she was still dopy from the anaesthetic, then let her get on with it.

My cat got spayed on Wednesday. The vets somehow managed to get a vest on her. No idea how they managed it lol but expect after the op the cats are still very sleepy, so they don't have much fight in them. She didn't have a cone though and wasn't asked about one either. I guess cones make it awkward for them to eat etc. Off to the vets this morning for post op check up.

I have no idea but keep the photos coming people 😻😍

Thank you everyone. Olive is not happy at all in her vest so will just leave it off! We have 2 very boisterous boy cats (both have been neutered) and they love rough and tumble so will separate her for a bit to make sure she is ok. To be fair she gives as good as she gets but it might not be fair if she is sleepy! Also they are both quite a bit bigger than her!
