I've had cats all my life and never had this problem before- can I do anything about it? Orlando is huge and had huge paws. He 's very affectionate and cuddly and loves to reach out a paw and "pat" the face or arm of the person cuddling him. The problem is that he extends his claws when he does it and it hurts! It's obviously not a deliberate scratch but sometimes he draws blood, and it makes having him on your lap a nerve wracking experience. We live in the country, and I am reluctant to trim his claws because he needs to be able to climb and defend himself. Or am I being precious about this? I've never trimmed a cat's claws before...

The paws concerned—and a sample victim!

I have to trim my girls claws as they make biscuits on my face. They are reasonably cooperative.

Trimming claws can be either quite easy or a nightmare depending on the cat. I would try initially just playing with and massaging a foot until he gets used to it and is happy with it, then trim just one claw & praise him. I spent 2-3 years "training" Boycat to have his claws trimmed (after the 2 years it took for him to accept cuddles & strokes!) but eventually I worked up to 2 feet per session. He always had a bit of a problem fully retracting his claws, and I could hear when he was due because the clicking as he walked on the laminate floor would get louder.

Maybe ask your vet to show you how next time he is in for jabs/MoT? You have to be careful not to trim them too short.
