New kittens - where should they sleep?

Picked up 2 kittens today - 9 week brothers. They came from a rescue where they had only ever been together in 1 room - people would go in and feed/stroke them etc but not used to being cuddled on laps etc.

They suggested that when bringing them home I should keep them in 1 room to start with, which is fine, they have been in the lounge and happy enough scooting around, hiding behind the sofa and then coming up onto the sofa for cuddles and a nap.

Am I ok to shut them in here overnight too? They have a bed, litter tray, food, water etc so everything they need in here. Or should I bring them to my bedroom when I go to bed? Of course back in the rescue place they would have been in their little room, so I think I am overthinking this, but it's been a while since I've had kittens and feel like I've forgotten everything!

Photo coming when I am on my phone!

Ok latest silly kitten question - they have been much sleepier this afternoon than they have the last couple of days - normal? They have been playing on a new scratch post/tower so we may well have just tired them out! But quite a difference today compared to yesterday. I assume I don't need to worry. Still eating and drinking fine.

It sounds like they're just settling in!

MissIndecisive2023 · 06/01/2024 19:46

Ok will leave them to it in that case!

My cat is now 7months.. l let him have run of house when I'm in.. but if going out he's in the open plan kitchen / dinning room.. also there on a night time.. he's got his toys / bed/ litter tray.. he has a wood sifting tray.. so no smell of urine and l just poop scoop the rest.. he's been neutered but hasn't been outside yet. I'm going to decide in spring after his injections if I'm going to let him out.( huge garden two huge apple trees for him to climb). Don't have them in your bedroom on a night.. you won't get any sleep.

MissIndecisive2023 · 06/01/2024 19:55

They have stayed in the lounge for now and seem to be happy enough. Fingers crossed!

From being 9 weeks to 7 months.. we think he has some main coon in him because he's huge and has the characteristics of furry ears/ tail etc. When l first got him l was told he was a girl.. took him to vets for first checkup and found out he was a Tom and not a queen.. but l still loved him the same.Never changed his name either.. so he's still called the same name.. but not too girly.

Cat and kitten both slept in the bedrooms on beds. Perfectly fine.

DRS1970 · 07/01/2024 11:40

As long as they have food, water, somewhere to toilet, and places to bed, and the room is safe for them, I am sure they will be fine.

I had no idea that kitten proofing a room would be so difficult! I’m glad for my recent declutter but my goodness they get everywhere!!

Mine is eight months old now and still seems to find stuff that I thought I'd hidden or put away properly Grin

We allowed our kittens in the bedroom with us. No issues

It's encouraging me to keep the lounge tidy! Unfortunately lots of items have been redistributed around the house so will need to introduce them room by room in order of which ones I can kitten proof first!

They're lovely. Living room sounds fine as long as they have everything they need in there, possibly leave them with something that smells of you too.

I have 5, all adults - one is segregated at night because he is a fiend, he sleeps in with me and has a litter tray in my room plus food and water in the hall. Sometimes one or two of the others join him. Any remaining cats are in the living room with plenty of beds, food, water. It works well and I get purring at night, which is conducive to falling asleep.

How much should they be eating at 9 weeks? According to the whiskas kitten pouches they should be having 3-3.5 per day, but they aren’t eating anywhere near that. Maybe 2 each? They do have biscuits that they have access to all day (and they are eating these) but they just aren’t eating all the wet food I put down. I was told to feed 5-6 times per day so have been doing that but it’s not all getting eaten.

They seem fine so I wouldn’t be worried if I hadn’t read how much they should be eating!

The pouch amount is if they aren't having dry food too. They will eat less wet if they are having dry too

Our 6 mth old has maybe 1-1.5 pouches a day - he also has access to dry food

rockstarshoes · 08/01/2024 00:00

Mine lived in the utility room for about 4 days, I would go sit in there with them.

At about day 4 we opened the door but kept them downstairs!

Then gave them the run of the place! They chivvy us up to bed, one plays in the bedroom for a few mins until the light goes out & then goes to the nest she has made in the bottom of the Airing cupboard and the other one goes to his bed in the spare room but visits about 3 times per night for cuddles!

It's not ideal but he's so gorgeous, gives us lots of nose bumps & licks your hand as you stroke him so all is forgiven! 🙄

Threeboysadogandacat · 08/01/2024 03:19

My 12 week old only eats 1 pouch a day and some dry food. I was a bit concerned as it doesn’t seem much but she has grown quite a bit in the 2 weeks that we’ve had her and the vet described her as a “nice sturdy kitten” for her age. I think they are all different and eat what they need.

MissIndecisive2023 · 08/01/2024 08:35

Thanks for the reassurance re the food. They should be going to the vet this week for jabs so hopefully they will check them out weight wise too.

going to let them explore the rest of the house today!
