Anxious Cat

Hi there, I'm after some advice regarding my 11 month old male cat.

He's always been quite sensitive, but over the last 4 weeks or so he's becoming increasingly anxious.

He's never been massively keen on visitors and has always ran upstairs to hide away from them initially, we don't have many so maybe he isn't used to them. He would mostly eventually come downstairs (if the visitor was a quiet person on their own) and play with them, take treats from them etc. Now he hides when anyone visits.

He's also now hiding when we (my OH and I) walk into the house, he'd usually be stood waiting for us with the rest, but now he runs upstairs to hide behind our pillows or even our actual bed. We do go upstairs and comfort him, he is fine with this, purrs, but if we for example lift up the pillow entirely he will burrow himself under the quilt.

It does seem to be noise related, ie walking downstairs, opening doors, music (not even loud, even just the Alexa on low while cooking) and we wonder if it stems from when we had the loft insulated as that was a lot of noise but only over a 1 hour time period. If we hoover he will hide for ages and refuse to eat, we therefore have to time when we hoover, make sure he's fed first, that we don't hoover and then go out etc.

He is still very loving with us, every night before bed he will cuddle with us, purr like mad and demand strokes, nudging us with his head etc, he will also sit on our knee. I don't feel he's scared of us, but when we are walking around he does seem nervous.

He gets along well with the other cats, no fighting, he sleeps with them, plays etc, no concerns there.

We do have a feliway plug in, this has made no difference at all.

Does anyone have any experience of this/ideas? We want to help him!

Here is our precious ginger boy!

What an absolutely beautiful boy. I found pet remedy helped more than feliway. And Zyklene sprinkled on food is supposed to help. I used it but no idea if it has any effect.

Gorgeous kitties.

Thank you, will give them both a try!

Has he been checked by a vet? If it's noise related it could be his ears.

Gorgeous!! What a handsome chap and a beautiful cat collection!

It does sound like he’s not used to visitors and that can make a massive difference but I second the getting the vets to check in case it is an issue with hearing - to rule it out if nothing else.

I’ve used feliway and the rescue stuff in the past and it’s made a difference .

He hasn't been to the vets yet re this, I'm really worried about that causing him loads of distress and making him worse!

It doesn't seem to just be noise, it can also be if we're walking close to him (he's never been stood on or anything)

Like today, I popped home at lunch to feed them all, something I don't do everyday but sometimes do, he was so scared he hid behind a pillow and refused to eat.

The plug in is having no influence either way.

I think a vets visit in order!

My 8 month old ginger boy is exactly like this too. He's slowly coming out of his shell but I think his scaredy cat ways may just be part of who he is!

He's also extremely curious and that's winning out over the fear a bit more often now.

Cat nip seems to relax him a bit!

I would definitely get him checked by a vet, there's prescription medication available that can help with severe anxiety, as well as herbal supplements but I'd want to make sure there was nothing physical/medical going on first.

One of mine is very nervous with strangers - he's absolutely fine with DH and I but if anyone else comes to the house he hides on the fridge and won't come out. He's four next year and it was only last summer that he came to see my mum who's been coming here since he was eight weeks old!

He also pees on himself when we have to take him to the vets Sad

Aww it's nice to hear you have a cat who is similar, I do agree that it is probably just their personality! I was told that ginger cats were crazy and naughty, but Simba is so sensitive! I think with ours, there has been a bit of a change, he's always been nervous, but is definitely worse now.

If he's on the kitchen sides and hears us walking into the kitchen or downstairs he will jump off immediately, he has never, ever been shouted at and 2 of our other boys are always on the kitchen sides (we have to lock them out to cook!) So its almost as though he's scared of us, but he will wake us up in the morning purring, fall asleep with us, sleep on our knee, demand attention and play etc, so I'm really not sure.

@margotrose
Aww poor gorgeous boy! That made me smile about him only just getting used to your mum, they really are such funny things!

We will definitely get him to the vets. I don't know whether it would be classed as severe or not, he is completely fine with us most of the time, just if there are noises or something happens outside of his routine!

Today when we got home from work he did run downstairs with the others and meow for food in the kitchen, so that's good, he hasn't done that for a few days. But I had to quickly hoover the spare bedroom tonight (indoor rabbits create a lot of poo!) and he's been hiding since.

Ooh he is gorgeous!

Definitely speak to the vet - if they think it's within the realms of normal there are loads of herbal things you can try. We've always had success with Zyklene but there are plenty of others too.
