Underweight kitten

I have a kitten which is almost 10 weeks and quite skinny. He's not quite 800g. I've been feeding him about 1/3 pouch of kitten food, 4 or 5 times a day, with dry kitten food available all the time.
Is there a better way to fatten him up? Would fish be better for him?

Convalescent food from the vets is great for this. My youngest cat was under 1kg at 5 months (digestive issues) and it took forever for her to gain weight.
She's still tiny - under 3kg at 21 months- but healthy with it. Just make sure the food has a good high protein content.

Mine was a similar weight at that age and we just did what you're doing - fed him small amounts throughout the day. He's eight months old now and thriving. He's still small for his age but it hasn't caused him any issues.

You can get special food for underweight kittens from the vet but tbh as long as he's eating etc. I wouldn't bother personally. I wouldn't give him human food either as you risk him refusing his kitten food in preference for it and kittens need the right balance of nutrients (plus plenty of taurine) to grow properly.

When you say you are feeding him a third of a pouch is that all he will eat or is that all you are offering? I would be concerned, having fostered kittens who all seemed to be eating machines on legs. You are doing the right thing to give frequent meals. Is he definitely 10 weeks old? Did you get him from someone you can trust not to have sold or given you a younger kitten?

@Chemenger that's all he can manage at a time. ☹️ I'm trying to offer feeds as soon as I think he will eat more. He's barely touching the biscuits.
No, on reflection, I don't entirely believe he was 9 weeks when I collected him. He's been checked over by a vet, and she didn't seem particularly concerned, just told me to feed him up a bit.

Our kitten was 3-4 weeks old and very poorly. Vet didn't expect her to survive, but she did. She's still very small 3kg and 3 years old. She has issues around eating but what I found worked best for her was lillys kitchen then kat kins. We also feed her chicken and anything else she would eat. Good luck

Don't worry about him only eating a third of a pouch at a time - they really can't eat huge amounts at once when they're that small.

Chemenger · 24/12/2023 23:38

Sounds like you’re doing all you can. Keep filling him up as often as you can. Is he pooing normally? No signs of worms or a tummy upset?

CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor · 27/12/2023 14:12

He's nearly 150g heavier. 🐱

That’s great news, keep up the good work.
