Kitten update

I posted on here a while ago when I adopted a couple of kittens from a local rescue and one became poorly. They both seemed so tiny that I wasn’t sure if they were only a few weeks old.
I received loads of good advice as well as a few people annoyed that I was new to having kittens and they were too young.
Anyway just wanted to share an update on them.
They are both great and doing well.
The poorly little black one is now a great chunk of a cat, he doesn’t seem very agile for a cat and rarely jumps. He tends to waddle more than walk. He loves food, possibly too much!
There other is still a totally tornado. Always causing mischief and up to no go. He’s still a bit on the bitey side and he bothers my older cat at times but when he does eventually tire himself out like kittens do he’s a proper lap cat!
What age would you recommend letting them out? They seem way too young and don’t seem to respond well to their names!

Perhaps leave it a little longer if you aren't sure. It's been a while since I've had outside cats but what I did do is put a collar on them, and got them used to a recognisable sound at dinner time, shaking dry food packet or banging the fork on a tin, then when they are outside and you aren't sure where they are, you bang on the tin and they just come running, my cats have never responded well to their names. I honestly can't remember the exact age but think it was around 15 weeks still small but not too tiny after being neutered and vaccinated,

But how can you post an update like that without any pics!

There are rules on this board, don't you know?

We've always tended to start letting kittens pout at about 5 months. Our last lot were already breaking out at that point anyway (master escape artists).
How old are yours now, and any chance of photos please?

Until they are fully healed from neutering always keep them inside for 3-4 weeks after that. Male kids unneutered will wander more, more likely to get into fights and get injured, and more likely to get killed in a road accident.

I also want to know about the pictures. I mean, I'm glad they're fine and everything but really...!

margotrose · 16/12/2023 15:25

I would try and keep them inside until spring, personally. Give them a chance to grow up a little bit.

I have a massive chunk of a black boy! They're fab!

PepsiCoco · 17/12/2023 15:17

Hi, they are exactly 6 months. Both boys so neutered about a month ago and full healed etc. Both like sitting on the window ledges looking out, they haven’t tried to escape to be fair. But they do edge close to the door when it’s opened but sit on inside looking out.
Banging their tin every time I feed them sounds like a good idea I’ll start that.
Photo added!

Six months is still quite young, and as they're black cats and it's winter I would really try and keep them inside until the days are longer and the brighter.

My two will come running if I shake the box of Dreamies (It's actually a Dreamies box with Sainsbury's fake Dreamies in it but they don't seem to have noticed).

Glad you've paid the photo tax 🙂
