Advice on diarrhoea in cat

Has anyone got any advice please...

Our cat (1.5 years old) has got diarrhoea but oddly will not use the litter trays and is doing it on the carpet. Always used litter trays before, at first I thought it must be catching him by surprise and he couldn't make it to the litter tray on time, but the last couple of times he's gone just a few centimetres from the litter tray.

Took him to the vets, vet thought he may have eaten something as cat is a hunter. Gave him an antibiotic jab that lasts 14 days and a tube of 6 in 1 probiotic type paste. I also bought some probiotic powder to put on his food.

1 week later and he's still got diarrhoea. I wondered if he was stressed, not sure why, nothing has changed in the household but I bought a Felliway plug in to see if that would help.

He seems fine in himself, still cuddly, energetic, wants and eats his food etc. I'm just worried this cannot carry on.

A few people have mentioned antibiotics can give cats diarrhoea so am I right to hope when the 14 day dose is out of his system it might clear up itself? Is there anything else I can try?

I'm happy to go back to the vets if that's the right thing to do but what can they do? What can I ask them to check?

I'm not very confident in vets after a massive misdiagnosis of my dog that led to a £1500 bill when it was just a simple eye infection.

Has he been wormed?

The next step from the vet is probably a stool sample.

It was giardia that gave my cat diarrheoa and it hadn't shown up in the stool sample. It's a course of worming powders that cured it.

What is your kitty eating?

Sometimes one of mine gets a bout of diarrhoea and we can’t often pinpoint the cause. We switch his food and then he’s fine and can go back to his normal food shortly afterwards.

Thanks both, yes fully up to date on flea and worm treatment.

Could look to change his food although he's so fussy it's hard to find one he'll eat.

Will google Giardia.

You’re not feeding him Purina wet are you? Food of the cat devil. Sensitive stomach dried food for one meal and a fish based wet for the second. See if that makes a difference.

Thanks @TerfTalking any particular brand that you recommend?

It’s tricky when you’ve got a fussy eater. One of mine would rather starve than eat something he didn’t like.

When he’s got a dicky tummy try Almo Nature chicken. It’s just boiled chicken and gentle on the stomach.

Thanks @BlueberryVelvet yes mine is the same, I find it quite unbelievable that they can be so fussy. I'll find some of this and try him.

The vet advised us when our cat had diarrhoea to give him things like fish and chicken. I just got a load of coley steaks and they cook quickly stuck in the microwave, and cooked chicken legs and shredded them. (The things I do!) Moved him back to usual food when it cleared up.

We also do this. Chicken or fish for 3ish days. I think vet also told us scrambled egg

IAMs do a sensitive digestion and tend to be one of lesser expensive brands. Maybe try a small bag of that. Also agree with the chicken and fish diet in the short term. I buy whiting or coley frozen and those cheap chicken pieces from Tesco.
