New cat arriving tomorrow!

So exciting but also nervous as to how my current two will adapt. Have a quiet room ready which the resident cats don't use to let him settle for a bit. Any good tips for introducing a new cat into the mix?
I don't have a photo of the new guy yet but promise to pay the cat tax when I've got him!

How exciting!
Are your current cats quite laid back with other cats?
I'd get some Feliway plugged in and let the cats smell each other in the house for a few days, scent swap, then allow them to see each other but not interact. Then gradually allow some supervised time and remove newbie before anything goes wrong and keep repeating the time together until you're happy they're getting along.

For most of our cats they were excited kittens and wandered around oblivious to the resident cat hissing at them. We had one who was really nervous and he had to stay in our bedroom while the resident cat wailed on the other side of the door. We gave him a few days, kept swapping scents by rubbing socks on their cheeks then I let him follow me into the spare room one morning. Resident cat was half-asleep on the bed watching him and not alarmed. He panicked when he saw her and ran back to the bedroom, then he spent ages poking his head around the doorway when she fell back asleep. The transition was quite quick considering how nervous he was (he still is with strangers).

So exciting! I reserved a cat as well a few days ago from a rescue centre and waiting to be told when she will be able to come home :).

Like you I put all the cat stuff in the spare room so she can have her own quiet space while she adapts to the house.

I also put two litter trays: one in the spare room and one downstairs.

Good luck! We did all the things mentioned and we still have massively sulking adult cats after 6 weeks. We have some theories which I'll update my own thread on.

To be fair I did all of this and my cats barely tolerate each other 😁
I think it just depends on the cats...

BaileysAllRound · 15/12/2023 13:04

Resident cats are very different, they tolerate each other well most of the time but one is definitely a bully and will boot the other out of their nap spot if he fancies the look of it. We live rurally surrounded by farmland so they have lots of space and don't come across other cats that often. Our nearest neighbour has 4 and we've never even seen them.
The incoming rescue cat lived with his brother who has been lost and he's quite lonely so hoping he will be happy to have playmates

Here with the cat tax! He's gorgeous. He hid for about an hour then decided he much preferred scratches and cuddles to hiding and has been nuzzling and purring since then! He's tucked away in his own room for now, we'll start scent swapping tomorrow and give it a few days before we introduce him to the resident cats.

Getting a 23 week kitten next week from rspca. Can anyone recommended brand of cat food (preferably not too expensive and easy to buy in supermarket) also cat biscuits ? Do they need alongside wet food? Also how many pouches a week do I need?
