We're with animal friends

The two older ones (10 and 11) are now a little over £40 each per month
The 7 year old is now £35 pcm

It's suddenly sky rocketed

What the....?

£35 a month for a 7yo cat seems absolutely extortionate to me 😳

We pay that amount for an 8yo and a 4yo combined, and the 8yo is on regular medication.

Ilovemyshed · 15/12/2023 06:41

£18/pm for a 15 yr old cat

MrsJamin · 15/12/2023 06:43

Yeah same. I'm not sure it's worth it any more. I'm with animal friends too. Their free video chat service is really good though 😕

I pay £85 a month for two 4 year olds with pet plan, but they are on the top level of insurance and I’ve claimed £20,000 of surgery in their short lives so I think it’s good value for money. They’ve never quibbled over the claims (recurring conditions for both cats).

Toddlerteaplease · 15/12/2023 08:03

I was paying £118 a month for the late Magic & Cheddar. So anything less seems reasonable to me!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/12/2023 08:03

I also claimed £25k!

Tilllly · 16/12/2023 02:49

@margotrose @Ilovemyshed

Which insurance is that?

@Tilllly we're with Tesco but it is on one their old policies which doesn't exist anymore.

We also pay a fairly high excess per condition (£120) to bring the monthly costs down.

I have to say though, Tesco have always been really easy to deal with and claiming takes minutes.!

DaisyDando · 16/12/2023 08:04

Ours went up to over £100 for a 15 year old ginger this year. We have never had cause to claim. I know that’s a good thing, but we had to put a stop to it.

MotherOfCatBoy · 16/12/2023 08:10

Ours has gone up too. Recently quoted 100 more for our 12 year old, shopped around and saved 70 on the previous year’s premium (so 170 cheaper than the renewal quote) for the same level of cover (I checked, including excess).
We also have two younger siblings, just had the renewal through, different firm, that’s shot up too. In my list to shop around again.

Star11111 · 16/12/2023 08:10

I pay around £80 a month for a 6 year old dog and a 12 year old cat. The cat was run over last year and had major surgery to repair a perforated diaphragm to the cost of £5k. She’s also on cardiac medication for life for a heart murmur and has regular check ups with a cardiologist so I think it’s good value for money. The dog had no problems at all.

Odd thing, one of the older cats had 2 ops last year, over £3k worth

Yet her premium is same as her mums who's had no vets bills

You do need to be careful shopping around for pet insurance as anything you've mentioned to the vet in the past (even if you haven't claimed) can be classed as a pre-existing condition and excluded from any new policies.

Tilllly · 16/12/2023 11:08

@margotrose
I'm not concerned about the exclusions as the only things they've had have been one offs

Am worried about a new insurer with older cats tho

My vet told me this is to try and stop people from letting their pets suffer because they know the premium will go up - so they keep the premium based on age, excess etc and its not changed by how much is claimed.
