Have tried to remove with olive oil and washing up liquid. Some still won’t come off. Any advice welcome x

Will she put up with a sock to stop her licking it?

Singleandproud · 14/12/2023 18:23

Peanut butter or another type of cooking oil/ baby oil?

Take the poor thing to the vets. They'll probably have to put them under general anaesthetic to wash them.
(I had a cat that trod in a bowl of engine oil. I tried using swarfega to wash him, but he morphed into a wailing, hissing ball of furry anger and tried to bite me)

@EmptyYoghurtPot

At pets stores and at the vets there's specifically products to wash your pets fur ,

I think you maybe be able to buy them on the Internet such as Amazon for example

someone will come along sooner or a bit later of the specific names of particular pets products such as this..

ask if there are any vets on mumsnet or give them a ring your local vets..

Have rung vets- advice was to wash as much as we can and keep close eye on her.

Yes, you need to make sure kitty isn't licking it off, I imagine tar could be pretty toxic stuff for a cat. So quick action to remove it is needed, even if it does mean emergency vet visit. I wouldn't be waiting for an Amazon delivery of cleaning products to arrive/

@MrsMoastyToasty Shouldn't laugh but Swarfega! I can visualise that scene so well....

KeeeeeepDancing · 14/12/2023 18:44

Can you shave her paw?

margotrose · 14/12/2023 22:30

Whereabouts is it on her? Can you shave it off?

FadedRed · 14/12/2023 22:34

Butter will soften and emulsify tar, just work in gently into the tar with gentle fingers, then you can wash it all off with detergent and warm water (if the cat will let you!). You can use sugar with the butter is you need a bit of granular substance to help massage it in to the tar.
Butter also works on clothing to remove tar and oil, use before washing with detergent. And butter and auger together to get tar and oil off hands.

We had the same problem last year.
We took him to the vets after a quick phone call .
They have a shower room for just this reason.
2 hours later, he came home looking like a film star.
His was engine oil, on a mostly white cat !
Hope you can sort it .
