New cat really struggling

Hello
I wonder if anyone can help or at least sympathise. We adopted a young (1-2yrs) male neutered cat five weeks ago. He's beautiful, friendly and very clever but so noisy! He's from a vocal breed anyway, but I totally underestimated how many shrieks, howls and squawks he could make. It's not so bad during the day but night time is becoming unbearable. Where ever he sleeps - upstairs or downstairs, there is a 2.30 am session of wailing as he asks for cuddles or to be let in or out of various rooms. He quietens down eventually but starts up again at 5.30 for food. We have a small open plan house and there is literally nowhere to put him so that we can't hear him. I've tried letting him sleep with us which helps a bit but not totally as he still fusses and moans if he can't get comfortable. Will he get better? Is there anything I can do to help quieten him down?

Timed freeder?

Does he have outdoor access?

Hermittrismegistus · 08/12/2023 09:30

He sounds bored/ lonely. Can you get another cat or a dog as company?

SushiAndSkittles · 08/12/2023 09:31

Yes I’d suggest getting a timed feeder. Sometimes it takes a little while for cats to settle into a routine.

Puppylucky · 08/12/2023 09:44

He has dry food always available so I don't think it's that unfortunately. I agree it's loneliness but not sure what I can do about that if he's still moaning and fussing when he's in with us. Getting another pet isn't really an option sadly.

Lots of cats will ignore dry food in preference of wet - I would set a timed feeder up for him so he has access to wet food during the night as well as his biscuits.

Does he go outside? If not, he probably needs to. Some cats are content indoors but many do need the stimulation of being out.

He will almost certainly settle and be less annoying in time. Or you'll find you just get used to it!

Oh, I love a noisy cat! You could try a Feliway diffuser to calm him a little. I've noticed if I make the same noises back to my vocal cat, that often ends the 'conversation'.

Ear plugs.

I feel your pain. I have cats that are also from a vocal breed. Having a bedtime routine (lots of play, food, sleep) really helped with mine. Vocal breeds like burmese, bengals and oriental breeds need lots of play and stimulation during the day. Mine also sleep on my bed, I keep all internal doors slightly ajar so they can potter about in the night.

Puppylucky · 08/12/2023 23:19

Thanks to all the replies. Yes he does go out but we have a tiny walled garden so he doesn't do much more than stare at next doors blackbird. We also have him on Feliway so maybe that will help. I'm trying to give him as much play and stimulation as I can during the day, but he can be very lazy during daylight hours and I need to bully him into getting off the armchair and engaging with his toys. I think his bedtime routine could be better perhaps as he tends to doze until we go to bed and then wake up when the lights go off downstairs so maybe another play session then. And yes to earplugs!

Cats are naturally crepuscular which means they're at their most active at dawn and dusk. It's totally normal for cats to sleep the day away and personally that's not something I would push to change as it does go against their natural behaviour.

Does he have interactive toys he can play with on his own? A cat tree or a kicker or lots of balls and stuff that he can bat about and chase?

No help at I know, but my cat is almost 100% silent. If he does make a noise we both jump.😹
I would love a chatty cat
