cat pooing outside of tray in house

She does it randomly. I've tried many things ie getting an additional tray (which she sometimes uses), been to the vets (who wasn't concerned about it), etc. Been online many times to see what other people say but nothing obvious, many seem to think it is just a cat thing. Anyway, can any of you recommend a good spray that i can spray on the area once i have cleaned it up to try and deter her as whenever she does it it is usually in the same kind of area. I already have a spray but it doesn't seem to work. Really frustrating as apart from the fact it is vile/time consuming to clear up but i worry about her too although she seems fine in every way other than the occasional poo on the carpet/floorboards thing. Thanks

Mine does it occasionally too. I think she positions herself too close to the edge and then poos over it as sometimes it's half in half out. I put puppy training pads underneath, I use two so it covers a good area. Her litter is on our utility so on a concrete floor so I don't need to worry about it too much.

thanks for your response. sadly, mine doesn't miss the tray, she (roughly once a week or every couple of weeks give or take) will poo in another room or ie on the top floor she has (today) pood in the room next to the bathroom that has a littler tray so it is really frustrating. i have spent about an hour working out online which litters to try, there are so many but that is my next thing to try. i have just cleaned out both the trays although neither were in a bad way but i'm desperate as it beats scrubbing carpet...

One of mine will poo on the floor if he decides his litter tray isn't clean enough Hmm

We use Simple Solution to clean up but luckily he does it on wood 99% of the time so it's just a case of wiping it up and cleaning down the area,

freakyfriday23 · 05/12/2023 16:30

we have wood and carpet in our house, our cat has pood on both, oddly enough usually in my dds room on the carpet which is a bugger to get off and usually leaves a vague mark

If it's mostly in DD's room I would try to keep the door closed where possible just to try and break the habit. The issue with carpet is that if it soaks into the underlay it's a real bugger to get the scent out.

ArcticBells · 05/12/2023 16:56

mine also poos randomly in the house. Sometimes I think it's because the litter tray isn't clean enough but at other times I think he's just particularly thick! He's been like it since a kitten

Tell your cat NOT to think outside the box

Notquitegrownup2 · 05/12/2023 17:21

What are you using to disinfect/deodoriser her tray between uses? You might need something stronger. If she can still smell wee or poo there from last time she may consider it used and so be looking for somewhere clean to go . . .

anybloodyname · 05/12/2023 18:17

Mine seems to climb partially in the litter tray - head and 2 legs - then pees half in half out on the floor

Drives me insane

Once I've cleaned I spray some pet odour neutralising deterrent stuff in an attempt to stop her doing it again. It works she just soils somewhere else.. this afternoon I did some online homework and have made a note of a few different brands of cat litter. Have just ordered one so will see if it makes a difference

I have no hope with mine unless I buy the same litter. If he feels anything different under his feet, he won't even consider using the litter tray Confused

longtompot · 05/12/2023 20:57

Ahh I see @freakyfriday23 When our old boy started weeing in different places than his litter tray we bought some more trays and put them in the areas he was weeing. Maybe try that?

VeryQuaintIrene · 05/12/2023 21:04

How old is she? My nearly 21year old has real trouble getting her arthritic old legs into a regular litter tray, so maybe try a different tray?

Argh! Mine does that too. Sometimes it's 3 legs in. He prefers to pee on the newspaper next to the litter. But he's old (16) and very wobbly. We've decided to replace the carpet after he goes.

beethecrackon24995 · 05/12/2023 22:16

For the last 8 years I've used pets at home non clumping kitten litter. Really good but the bastards have just discontinued it. No idea why. It was very popular as it was regularly sold out.

beethecrackon24995 · 05/12/2023 22:24

We did....her latest carpet poo was in a room next to the bathroom we put a second tray. No reason for her not to have used that nice clean second tray. We can't put a tray in the bedroom but the bathroom just off it is the next best thing. Love her to bits but she's a pita when she does this although I can't be cross with her and I do worry even though the vet wasn't concerned.

beethecrackon24995 · 05/12/2023 22:25

She's 9 today!

lndnbrdge91 · 06/12/2023 06:58

I have used vanish carpet and upholstery cleaner, and then sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda. Leave that for A couple of hours then hoover and clean off with some water down white vinegar. I have also used dr beckman stain and odour remover which was good.

I feel your pain. My second cat is 14 and does this randomly in an upstairs room. We are trying a stair gate as she's too old to jump it. This seems to be working but she may just as easily choose a new place to go which isn't the tray!!
