I have an elderly lad (unsure exactly how old as he was a rescue and had been a stray). We adopted him having already been diagnosed hyperthyroid. It's always been tricky to keep under control, I suspect largely because he goes through phases of puking alot for no ascertainable reason. We've tried every food under the sun, he's been investigated endlessly by the vet, given antireflux medication that hasn't made a jot of difference. Vet concluded he is just a puker and that's that.
He's never been a big eater and it has been a struggle to keep weight on him (not helped by the thyroid levels being so up and down as well as the endless vomiting). He was 2.5kg when we got him 2.5 years ago. We managed to get him to the lofty heights of 3.1kg once, but he's generally always been under 3kg. Recently, his fur is falling out, he's eating like a horse and he's back down to 2.5kg (from 2.7kg a few months ago). Had thyroid bloods checked and they were too high.
The vet has increased the thyronorm a few weeks ago (rechecking bloods in a few weeks again) but he's still eating loads, fur still in a mess and we're seeing no noticable improvements. He had his kidneys checked too and they're ok. I don't know if the weightloss might be something like cancer? But it would fit with his thyroid level being too high. But I don't know why he isn't improving after the medication increase. Obviously I will go through all this with the vet in a few weeks when we are back for more bloods, I just wondered if anyone else had no apparent response to the medication increase? I suppose what I am asking is might this be the beginning of the end? He's always bounced back from a medication increase quite quickly so I am worrying why he hasn't this time.
