Sore back?

2 year old cat, never been overly keen on full body stroking but yesterday I felt something on his back about an inch or 2 from his tail. Tried to look and he legged it. No one can get near it now. He howls and lashes out if you stroke him over that area.

he appears to be moving normally. Eating, I don’t see him drink but assume he is 🤔 the same for the toilet.

what should I be concerned about and any tips on how to get a look at his back without losing an eye 🫣

He might have a bite or an abscess

Clarich007 · 22/11/2023 12:02

I agree, first thing I thought about was bite or abscess..
Watch out for swelling in that area, being a bit off his food, then hair loss over the lump.Hope he's ok

Clarich007 · 22/11/2023 12:03

He's gorgeous by the way.I love gingers.

Poor chap. That sounds really painful. Another vote for abscess as he is moving normally.

As you can't get near him following advice not much use but I treat these by swabbing with warm salt water, then when they burst, applying sudocrem. Was astounded when vet said this was ok for cats, but apparently it is and it speeds healing.

If he becomes unwell in himself ( this tends to happen after hours and at weekends Halloween Hmm) then it's the vet pronto for antibiotics.

He's gorgeous Smile

If he won't let you near it then you may have to take him to the vets.

Xmasfairy86 · 22/11/2023 15:21

Thanks all. He is still not happy about me touching him 😕 literally moved the fur to see if I could see his skin and he cried

I think it's the vets then :(

margotrose · 22/11/2023 17:01

If he's in that much pain then he definitely needs seeing. If it's an abscess, it could be infected in which case they'll need to drain it, clean it and maybe give you some antibiotics to take home.

Xmasfairy86 · 22/11/2023 17:39

He has 2 puncture wounds but no signs of infection yet. Five day course of drugs for him.

Oh dear. good luck!

Xmasfairy86 · 25/11/2023 17:15

He returned this morning with a fresh, larger open wound 😫

another vet trip and some more meds. If it doesn’t scan and heal he may require stitches.

Never knew how expensive this vet malarkey was!!

Oh no! Hopefully he recovers quickly - it may be best to keep him indoors until he's fully healed or you could end up stuck in a vicious cycle.

Xmasfairy86 · 25/11/2023 22:00

Yep. He’s an inside cat for the foreseeable and loving life 🤦🏽‍♀️
