Cat flea injection- anyone tried this? Worth it?

Hi as the title says really- I have 2 cats, one long haired, both rescue cats, horribly difficult to administer any flea treatment as were semi feral. This year has been a tough one flea wise, we've tried everything- Advantage worked for a while but seems to have stopped being effective. Tried Frontline last month which I hadn't used in years, useless. Using Acclaim spray for the house. My long haired cat seems to still have live adult fleas on her, itching like mad. I'm going to make a vets appointment but wondered if anyone had had experience of the injection before I go ahead. Thanks.

Sorry I don't have experience of the injection but I've found treatments from the vet are soo much more effective than from pet shops. My vet changes their recommendation every year or so, so the fleas don't build up tolerance. At the moment I use Felpriva which does both fleas and various types of worms and only needs to be applied once every 3 months which is so much easier than trying to get two products on them each month. It works out to be around £11 a month per cat and then I use Indorex for the house if needed but usually only once a year if that. Hopefully someone can come along with their injection experiences :)

Frontline stopped being effective long ago IME. I find Advantage still works for mine (they are short haired).

I would ask your vet for advice, there will be a couple of alternative spot-ons they can prescribe which you can try. There is one called Bravecto which you apply every 12 weeks which may work for your cats.

Thanks so much for your replies. I have made the appointment now - mildly dreading the idea of getting them in the cat carrier! I think either option of the injection or the 3 month treatment sounds alot better than what I'm doing now. With the 3 month treatment, once they've seen the cats once I assume I can just get on prescription?

Yes the vet should issue repeat prescriptions for flea/worm treatments as long as they have seen the cat in the last year. Good luck!

We are using Felpreva. It's three monthly. The cats were due it this week, however, and there has been a little flea activity. No sign of scratching or fuss from the cats but I have been bitten. Indorex this weekend.

One went to the vet on Thursday who couldn't find any sign of fleas on her so it may be the other one. She goes on Monday.

Vaccinations, check up and two doses of felpreva £158!

Since the under care regulations came into force in 1st September it is not this straightforward. Prescribing of anti parasitic products now require a hands on examination at which the product was prescribed in the last 12 months - so if that particular product was not prescribed at the time of the examination it can no longer be dispensed. There is an allowance in the new regulations till the 13th January if there is a examination and the product has been dispensed to put a written prescriptions in the notes, but if no flea product has been prescribed a hand on examination is required now.
Antiparasitic products have now been given the same level of prescribing protection as antibiotics.

Thanks @Lonecatwithkitten

That it wouldn't affect the OP though because she's specifically asking about the flea treatment at this visit.

My cats have been having Program flea treatment by injection for years, we have never had an infestation. However at their last visit the vet said she thought it might be being discontinued, which is annoying as they don't tolerate spot-ons.

Worked a treat on my two- followed it up with regular credelio tablets which I crush into a cat yoghurt treat thing every month.

We were really struggling, fleas were everywhere- indorex and the above got rid of the lot.

Credelio really worked on my cat but the vet gave it to him as a whole tablet, so I'm very interested to hear that you can crush them up in a treat.
