How near is 'near to a main road' for rescues?

We are thinking of getting a cat and there are several rescue centres local to us - I've been looking at their websites.

Does anybody know what counts as 'near a main road' for rescues? And do local independent charities take a different view to Cats Protection?

We live on a housing estate. The far end of the housing estate backs on to a main road (rural A road)

Between us and that road is our largish front garden (in a quiet drive of 6 houses), then hedges, a small playing field/park, and another small cul de sac, with the main road beyond that. That means there's plenty of territory for a cat to roam before it goes anywhere near the main road - but if you look on a map it is very close.

We hoped we could get a cat that could be out (via cat flap) during the day.

Quite a few people locally have cats (there is a beautiful black and white girl who sometimes sits under the tree in our front garden, and she got us thinking!) but if anyone is in the know, I'd rather be put straight now and not get my hopes up.

Obviously I wouldn't want to put a cat at unnecessary risk.

That sounds absolutely fine.

I've had 2 from rescues at my current house which is on a main-ish (30mph speed limit) road, but with a decent sized garden and miles of uninterrupted countryside behind. Both times I've chosen streetwise cats and neither have gone out the front.

Thank you. We have more housing estate behind us unfortunately, but I may contact a local rescue and get their view.

I think it varies by charity. Battersea dogs’ home (they do cats too!) didn’t care at all.

Cats aren’t idiots, they would be fine. But the rescues are militant in my experience and I’d prepare yourself for potential disappointment. I trapped my own feral kitten and domesticated it in desperation after rejection from multiple rescues for various mad things- needing someone at home all day, needing to take a pair, proximity to a main road etc.. She’s happy, healthy and absolutely fine!

Sounds fine. We adopted from a small local place and they did zero checks on where we live - I was quite surprised how little they checked us. I told them verbally we lived on a quiet road, and they knew our address so guess they may have checked Google maps. It's always a risk wherever you live, really.
