Fleas fleas fleas

Gave my cats flea treatment 10 days ago (Frontline for the 2nd month running, not Advantage as usual) and there are more fleas on my cats than ever before - occasionally in the past Ive seen a flea on my white cat just when the flea treatment is due, but there are definitely several on each cat. And lots of flea crap.

I’ve got to wait the full 28 days before using another treatment right??

(Please tell me I’m wrong…)

I think so. Would the cat tolerate being washed with flea shampoo?

Hhmmm I’ve never tried washing them… I think that could end very badly for me as well as the fleas

You might be able to give a flea tablet if you've already done the flea treatment. I've done this before but best to double check.

WonderingWanda · 12/11/2023 22:11

@RandomQuestionOfTheDay yes, it was a long shot. Not many cats would tolerate such an indignity. I wonder if you can get some sort of zapper comb like they do for nits?

dementedpixie · 12/11/2023 22:11

Check with your vet. Fleas are often immune to fipronil which is what is in frontline.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/11/2023 22:25

We e had the same issue, the only flea treatment that currently works is bravecto and yes you'll have to wait a month 😕

We managed it by daily flea combing the cat and keeping her contained to downstairs to avoid fleas getting into the bedrooms.

I'm picking up the bravecto next week!

Beamur · 12/11/2023 22:30

You can't put another treatment on.

I use stronghold plus and my cats have never had fleas

You can use Indorex for your house and that will kill fleas in the environment

brindimo · 12/11/2023 22:56

Yes Bravecto was the only thing that worked for our cat, frontline wasn't doing anything!

RandomQuestionOfTheDay · 18/11/2023 11:35

Thanks all. I spoke to the vet (as she rang with blood test results) and she also said Bravecto was best but she’d need to see my cat who’s been ill (hence blood tests) first because she’d need to check he’s well enough. So that makes me a bit concerned as he’s been very poorly.

Currently Indorex-ing the house (hard with a house full of people). Cats cross I’ve locked them outside in the wind and rain this morning. an electric flea comb arrives tomorrow.

The fleas on the cats are ridiculous. But I don’t think we’ve been bitten yet.

8 days until cat 1 can have a flea treatment and 13 days until cat 2!!!!

Frontline shouldn’t be allowed to sell a useless product (vet agreed the fleas are often immune to it now).

I use Frontline Plus, and haven't yet had any problems, but I read on here constantly how it doesn't work, so that's interesting. I use that because it's one of only a few that also cover Ticks, which we do have a problem with.

Before all the super duper spot ons, we had to use powder, which the cats hated, and it got everywhere, so we generally resorted to regular flea combing, which is actually extremely effective. For those who enjoy disgusting things, running your fingers along the combs and squashing the fleas was very satisfying.

Helenahandkart · 18/11/2023 12:25

Bravecto does ticks as well. We use Bravecto Plus and never have fleas. I think it also does worms.

I need a prescription for that though, I think. Arthur will not tolerate going to the vets anymore, I gave up, it's just too traumatic for him, so we are stuck with OTC.

Helenahandkart · 18/11/2023 13:48

You only need to take them once to get the prescription. Then you apply it yourself on a three month repeat without needing an additional appointment.
We went with Bravecto purely because you only apply it four times a year and our cat is impossible to pin down. Doing it every month was horrendous.
