Older cat behaviour

We have two cats - brother and sister, both 15 years old. The male has started wailing in the last six months. Vet has checked and said no physical health issues and that it is likely a sign of cognitive decline. Nothing we can do.

He has been showing signs of confusion - staring blankly, not responding. But then a moment later is back to his old self again.

But this morning he attacked his sister very aggressively - I heard the most awful noises from upstairs and ran down to find him on top of her with his jaws round her neck and fur everywhere. I shouted and clapped but he didn’t release her and I had to physically pull him off her.

He was very odd afterwards - sitting staring etc. But now he is curled up on my knee and back to normal.

His sister is not injured but was shaken for a few hours after (hiding under bed trembling).

What do we do? Grateful for any advice. We love them both so much.

I'd have him PTS. I don't believe it fair to keep animals alive when they're in such decline, he can't be very happy really.

Thanks for answering. I thought that might be an answer. The trouble is that he seems absolutely fine a lot of the time, snuggles up normally etc so it feels hard.

Oh rhubarb I am sorry. My 21 year old cat had kidney disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and hyperthyroidism. All easily controlled and still had quality of life. Then dementia struck and it was extremely distressing - he had a couple of (non consecutive) days when he ate nothing, cried loudly, paced restlessly and went in / out of the house repeatedly- he couldn’t settle and didn’t sleep or eat (cod / tuna or chicken. Nothing) all day. The next day he was fine. It was so distressing to see him like that; we made the decision to have him pts yesterday while he was having a good / peaceful day. You have another cat to consider too - it’s going to be terrible for her if she gets randomly attacked again.

Vermin I am so sorry for the loss of your cat yesterday. It sounds like you loved him very much.
