HELP! how to get rid of cat wee smell on carpet

Hi wise fellow cat-slaves

One of our moggies has peed 2-3 times on our new lounge carpet. She was spooked by another cat and she's already very 'highly strung'.

We've tried everything to get rid of the smell:

  • bicarb
  • bicarb and vinegar
  • enzyme sprays
  • carpet cleaner
  • carpet cleaning machine
  • febreeze

We thought it had worked but then realized we both had covid and just couldn't smell it anymore 😂. It definitely still stinks 😷🤮

do we have to take it up and replace underlay? would a professional clean get rid of it? is there anything else you have tried that works?

the carpet was pretty expensive and I can't really afford to replace it.

Dr Beckmann cleaner, the one with the brush on the end. The one for pets. Or a professional carpet shampoo of that doesn't work.,

A professional carpet cleaner would be my go to if all of those haven't worked! Or a patch and repair job.

I use a solution of biological washing powder and warm water. I just give the area a scrub with that solution. Then give it a light mist with a solution of water and white vinegar. This will make the any residual scent your cat may smell, and discourage them from doing the deed there again. GL

Agree biological washing powder solution is worth a try. A carpet cleaning machine should have had some effect on the underlay - did you use pet/enzyme cleaning solution in it?

Also exclude the cat from the area for at least a week to stop them 'topping up' the smell when you aren't looking.

An odour neutraliser like this:

Make a fairly wet paste from biological washing powder and leave it to soak in for a few days before removing. The smell/urine has probably soaked into the flooring below so the remedy must too.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2023 15:19

Take up the area of carpet. The pee has very likely soaked all the way through to the floorboards if she's peed there a few times. If there's an underlayer, you should throw it out and replace it.

I am currently working on a little patch of wood flooring where Dcat peed a few times. I've used hydrogen peroxide squirted onto a kitchen towel on the patch, with top ups daily. It seems to be reducing the staining and Dcat hasn't returned to the scene of the crime.

I would patch test the carpet somewhere hidden before trying this tbh. Some washing powders have brighteners etc in that could discolour your carpet if you put a paste on for days.

I got the smell out with this simple solutions stuff, did a repeat dose on the worst effected bits of carpet

I second this. We had a similar problem in the summer and it really smelt bad. This stuff really works-you need to saturate the area-right into the underlay-then leave for ten minutes and blot, then hoover the next day.

itsmeafterall · 01/11/2023 19:52

Thankyou everyone. Apologies for not responding- I've had covid 🤢

I think we may need to try replacing bits of underlay and then get a professional clean.

But nothing to lose by trying the washing powder one first.

Thanks all

Avoid the Dr Beckmann’s pet one if your carpet is not pale as I’ve found that it bleaches it! If you can hire a Rug Doctor, I would do that.

One of my cats ruined the carpet so badly when he forgot that the litter tray had moved that I had to pull it up, mind you. I feel you, it’s a terrible smell and makes you not want to have anyone round the house!

margotrose · 02/11/2023 15:33

Unfortunately things like Febreze and carpet clean will only have made it worse.

If pet enzyme sprays aren't working then you'll probably need to replace the carpet and underlay.

IDoNotMoisturise · 02/11/2023 15:39

yep I had to wait till my elderly cats died and then moved house! 😀 In their older years, the female peeed everywhere, vet it was an anxiety and age thing after the elder cat died. It was bloody horrid smelling that all the time. It has put me off getting another cat.
