Is 4 months the recommended age for neutering?

Or can I wait until they're more grown? Like you do with puppies? They're 3 months old at the moment, and I'm thinking ahead about when to get them fixed. DH says they're not getting done Hmm I told him to enjoy two fighting tom cats pissing all over the house. Anyway regardless of DHs feelings about it, they will be getting done as soon as they're old enough. To the best of our ability they will be indoor cats so happy to wait until they're a bit more grown up, I'm not so keen on the idea of getting them done when they're still babies.

@thecatneuterer I've emailed them for clarification and asked what pain relief they use.

Our vet gave painkillers to my kitten when he was under a kilo - I'd be wondering what the vet was on about tbh.

My kitten was neutered at 4 months. He's a handful and a half. He was racing around as soon as he got home.

Is the metacam not used after the operation if required rather than during?

margotrose · 02/11/2023 15:17

Mine had Metacam twice when he was under 2kg - he came to us as a semi-feral and had a few health issues. The vet just made up a weight-appropriate dose for him rather than giving him the pre-made stuff.

My meloxicam suspension says not to be used in cats under 6 weeks old!

Interesting. And confusing. I've just looked at a record from a recent castrate of a 1.5kg kitten and he was given Loxi (same as Metacam) and Ketamine during the surgery. No pain killers to go home with. I'll ask the vets about it being off licence when I get a chance. But in the 20 years I've been doing this it's never once been mentioned.

Actually I've just found it on a vet site. Your vet is correct. It must just be that all other vets use it routinely off licence.

My eldest kitten was done on Monday at 5months old, he came home a few hours later a little bit stoned, and his cone stayed on for 48h before he completely busted it, and tbh by then it really wasn’t needed anymore.
Our vets however don’t want to do my other male kitten who’s a pedigree maine coon, until he’s 9months minimum. Which potentially means us waiting another 6 months!
apparently it’s something to do with the development of the growth plates?

Well every day is a school day that's for sure! So the vets using it off licence, are they doing something wrong by using it or is it one of those 'use at your own discretion' type things?

I wonder if that's because of his breed? Maine Coons are huge aren't they so I would guess it could be because of that. I know dogs and cats are different but for dogs you shouldn't really get them neutered until 9 months at least, and even later for larger breeds to allow the growth plates to close.

They're not doing anything wrong. It just hasn't been stringently evaluated under those weights. But there is still a chart for dosage amounts under that weight. And of course it's routinely used.

Further Googling also interestingly revealed that Meloxicam (basically the same thing but different name) specifies age rather than weight, and so is off licence at under four months.
