Next doors cat turned into a bully

Been in my current house 2 years, moved with my 2 cats. Previous owner did not have pets and next doors cat was used to hanging out in my garden. I thought they would work it out and settle down with each other, but next doors cat is getting more and more of a bully. He bit my 12 year old on the ear a few months ago, which ended up getting infected. I have also seen him stalking her a few times - neither time was she aware he was behind her but he was doing that stalking type behaviour. Both times I opened the door and shouted at him and he ran back home. Yesterday I heard a horrible yowling in the middle of the day and went out to find my 5 year old male cornered by next doors cat, with clumps of my cats fur flying around and a ragged patch on his side. I shouted but next doors cat just watched me and I got right up to him before he walked away. Even even then he only just stayed ahead of me - I had to kind of herd him out of the garden. Even then when he reached the fence he sat and stared at me. At which point, I am ashamed to say, I grabbed a small stick and tapped him on the bum with it - not to hurt him, but to give him a shock and make him leave. I feel awful, but his behaviour seems to be escalating and my cats are now really scared. I thought I would get a super soaker - has anyone got any other ideas about how I can make him avoid my garden? It goes against the grain to do this, but I am worried about the safety of my cats. If my dog is around she will go mad and want to chase him off, but she is not always here.

Cat-proof your garden so he can't get in and they can't get out.

Unfortunately letting your cats out to roam comes with risks, and that includes fights with other people's cats.

Our garden is cat-proofed and it means our three can go outside and play/explore without me worrying about them getting lost or hurt. It wasn't particularly cheap but it's made such a difference.

The trouble is your garden is his territory and he’s defending it. A super soaker is definitely worth trying if your cats aren’t aggressive enough to win the territory from the other cat.
