Any painkilling suggestions I can give to my elderly fluffball?

Not sure if they do it for cats but our 13 year old arthritic dog has had an improvement on You Move

Anti inflammatory painkillers from the vet, they have made a huge difference to my cat.

Mrshook · 23/10/2023 10:31

My cat is on a monthly injection of solencia. Has transformed her life.

WoollyBat · 23/10/2023 10:31

My poor old wobbly girl is on steroids from the vet. Not just for her joints though as she has other issues, but she’s happy and not in pain. Vet might be able to prescribe something.

Baldieheid · 23/10/2023 10:35

We tried blue lipped mussel powder sprinkled on our 2 old cats food. It seemed to have eased their joints, and they certainly liked the taste. Capsules bought online and then opened and sprinkled on wet food. Very tasty, according to them both.

Baldieheid · 23/10/2023 10:36

Or maybe it was green lipped mussel. Sorry, it was a long time ago.

We have a monthly injection of solensia here too - it has made an amazing difference to my cat.

Try YouMove for cats before you go down the steroid route.

WoollyBat · 23/10/2023 10:51

Yes long-term steroids aren’t very good for the cat in other ways. Sadly my cat has a short life expectancy now so it’s ok for her to be on steroids to relieve pain, but there are better options if you expect your older cat to survive a few more years.

margotrose · 23/10/2023 12:50

Please take your cat to the vet instead of trying to medicate them at home. Different cats react differently to medications so you want to make sure you're giving them something that's suitable and safe.

Many medications can cause damage if used long-term so you don't want to treat your cat without vet supervision.

Ours is starting to show signs of arthritis but he's been seen by the vet and is on a painkiller trial to see if that helps him.

If your cat is noticeably stiff you need to go to the vets. They may be in a lot of pain.
Supplements are good for very mild symptoms. I've started my 10 year old cat on Yumove. I'd noticed a slight hesitancy in jumping onto my lap and wondered if he was beginning to feel a bit less springy. Cats mask pain very well.

She's 14 & pretty chubby so sadly unlikely to live for too much longer I fear 😰

Yes have read about the masking. Will take her to vets asap.
Gave her some fish oil tonight

Many cats live happy healthy lives beyond 14.
I'll say this quietly so she doesn't hear - being chubby won't help the joints. Could she be persuaded to slim down a bit?
