Difficulty giving medicine

We inherited our cat when my MIL died in 2020, she's an adorable girl and can't imagine our house without her now.

She was originally a rescue cat, and is now 15, so getting to be a more mature lady, but from when MIL first had her she's been pretty sassy and independent. She doesn't like being held or picked up, but can be very affectionate in her own way when she wants to be.

We realised she wasn't well a couple of days ago. She was shaking her head and scratching her ears a lot, ears were flatter to her head and then she started eating less (always a sign she's ill, as she loves her food normally) So we took her to the vet yesterday. She's got an ear infection possibly with polyps in her ears, so we've got cleaning solution as well as drops to give her.

We tried to clean her ears this morning, and I don't know who was more traumatised, Dcat or us? as well as being held still she had wet stuff in her ears which she obviously hates. We'll keep going with it naturally.

My question is, does anyone else have experience of trying to clean a cat's ears? I don't know if she's getting enough of the solution, or if my shaking hands are making things worse? Any tips would be a godsend. She's now in a total huff (although she munched the Dreamies quickly enough!) and I still need to try and give her ear drops...This may be the death of me!

I would (if possible) go with the purrito method. Someone wraps her up (tightly) in a towel or blanket so that she can't kick or scratch, then the other one does the medication.

We've had to use this method on three of our cats over the years - it wasn't fun for anyone but it got the job done and meant none of us got bitten or scratched.

I didn't try and clean Penelope's ears. I just got the drops down her!

If you hold them down firmly across their shoulder region you can do most things to them ( with 2 people one holding / one doing the deed) . That’s what I was advised by our vet and it’s worked for us .
