Looking to rehome a young cat

Our lovely old cat sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 17. We adopted him as a kitten & he's left a huge hole in our lives.
We've decided that we're now ready to adopt another cat.
Where do I look to adopt a young cat? I've looked at the local rescue centres websites, most have either very elderly cats or ones who are only suitable for houses with over 18s. My dcs are all young teenagers.
I was expecting to find the centres had lots of young cats at the moment ☹️
Any advice of where to look?

Have a look at rescues slightly further afield? There are so many young cats in rescue.

BellaEllaWella · 17/10/2023 22:50

Where are you based? My local rescue has a huge number of young cats

Talk to the rescues, as your kids are used to cats they may be more flexible around kids' ages. Search on cat chat site to find independent local rescues as well as the usual national ones.

@Grandprixmad Where are you based? My friends cat is currently expecting kittens, and we got our second cat a year ago from her and he is precious!!

Yes, he's lovely but your friend needs to get her poor female cat spayed rather than let her get pregnant two years in a row.

OP - am amazed you can't find a rescue willing to rehome to a family with young teens. Hardly the same as having toddlers. Have a look at the Cat Chat rescue pages for places in your area and the surrounding counties.

Where are you? My local rescue is drowning in kittens and young cats.

@IVFfirsttimer91 he is beautiful but I agree your friend needs to spay her cat. There are far too many unwanted cats and kittens in need of homes.

IVFfirsttimer91 · 18/10/2023 09:49

I absolutely agree with you. I’ve spoken to her about getting her poor cat spayed, but as she is not my cat I sadly can’t do anything about it. We have had both of our cats neutered, and our dog!

Thanks everyone, I'm in Glocestershire. I'll have a look at the Cat Chat pages 🙂

@IVFfirsttimer91 please get your friend to have her cat spayed!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/10/2023 18:41

Sorry. Just seen that you've tried.

Silkiefloof · 18/10/2023 18:54

There's a Maine Coon for adoption here in South Gloucestershire who is 5 though would be indoor, secured garden or catio. Kids OK.

@Grandprixmad we got two kittens from New Start Cat Rescue in GLOS. Worth a look.

CeeJay81 · 19/10/2023 10:13

Have you tried the local cat protection. Ours always have some. We got a kitten recently from ours. Worth calling them.
