Dealing with unsocialised kitten

i have a 12 week old kitten, from a friend, who I got 2 days ago. Her mum is a house cat, but had this litter outside, so the kittens have only been inside around 2 weeks. I have set her up in her own room, away from my other 2 cats, and am spending time in the room talking to her. She is still in hiding, but eating, drinking and using the litter tray when I am not present. I slept there last night, and she was crying a lot, but not wanting to come out of hiding at all.
i have not had an unsocialised kitten before and wonder what else I should be doing to help her

She's probably absolutely terrified, rather than unsocialised. Many cats hide in a new environment. Let her be but maybe just sit in the room with her, and let her come to you if she wants too.

If she's definitely been in a home for a fortnight it's more likely that she's scared rather than unsocialised. Remember, all she's known is her mum and siblings and now she's on her own in a strange house with a strange human - she's bound to be absolutely terrified.

Just let her have her own space and spend as much time sitting and talking to her as you can. Kitten treats are good plus toys to entice her into play.

Saying all that - how much interaction did your friend have with her? Is she used to people and being handled because if not, you really need to force interaction on her now (as awful as that sounds) because semi-feral kittens who aren't socialised quickly will often remain in that state for life.

Well, I went for ‘forced’ socialising and we managed quite a long cuddle and some purring before she went back under the bed, so some progress

We had a six week old semi feral kitten come to us in May - he was a hissing, growling spicy bundle of fluff Grin

He's now six months old and the most affectionate of all our cats. He loves a cuddle, adores people and follows me everywhere - he even waits at the door for me after work and before I leave.

Now six weeks is a bit different to twelve weeks but I would be doing as much socialisation and human contact as possible. They don't have much time to learn that humans are good before their socialisation window ends so as much fuss as possible is best.
