Cat Weeing little and often

So this past week or so I have noticed one of my two cats using his litter tray loads more but only passing small amounts of urine.

He was at the vet Monday who gave an anti inflammatory and I went back on Friday and he was given an antibiotic injection. Obviously I’ve done a lot of ready and the vet explained what I had read basically saying it could be a long haul, UTIs are rare so unlikely to be that and that stress induced cystitis is most common. She said next step could be antidepressants for him .

His behaviour hasn’t changed at all. He is more anxious out of the 2 cats but is certainly not depressed, is really social with myself and my partner but hides when other people come into house which he always has.

I am 20 weeks pregnant so wondering if he can sense something? Not sure what I can do to help though. I have the Felliway plugs and have also had him on the Felliway cystease capsules since Monday too. He eats a mix of mainly wet food with a few biscuits that are specifically for male sterilised cats so have stuff in for urinary heath.

He’s not in pain. He doesn’t cry when he wees. He isn’t missing his litter box. He is just going loads! However when he’s settled/chilling upstairs or asleep he can go hours and hours with out going and then does have a larger wee. Also both days at the vet they checked his bladder by feeling it and said it’s empty so deffo not blocked. And when he uses the tray wee always comes out just little bits.

anyone who has experienced similar I would love to hear from you and what worked.

Hi not really much help, but when one of my cats had the same symptoms we took her to the vet that day.He pressed on her bladder and tested it with a strip of paper thing, and said she had cystitis.
I hope your boy is ok.

We have a cat with stress-induced cystitis.

The only solution for us seems to be to have him on a permanent low dose of Cystease (one tablet a day) and two D-Mannose tablets a day, alongside plenty of wet food and a urinary dry food available to him at all times.

Since starting that regime he's never needed to go back to the vets though he still urinates outside his tray about once a month (always in the same spot).

I’m a vet and UTI’s are not rare and actually very common in cats. I’m assuming a culture has been carried out on his urine before giving the antibiotic injection? If it hasn’t that’s an issue. Also, antibiotic injections aren’t specific for urinary infections and are used as broad spectrum (like to use them in cats who wont take tablets as a last resort).
If an infection is present, antibiotic tablets specific to the urinary tract would be better. And I’m assuming the vet has followed the anti inflammatory injection by oral antinflammatories as UTIs are painful.

Additional things to help include

  1. water fountains & more water sources in the environment (not by windows etc)
  2. feliway
  3. cystese urinary capsules
  4. urinary diet
  5. d-mannose

My male cat had this - the vet couldn't find a physical reason so said it was probably stress. He's never liked loud noises - he won't go outside if it's windy as the trees are noisy,
I gave him cystease for a while, he's been on Hill's Prescription Diet Urinary Stress food for years now, plus Felix soup twice a day to keep his liquid intake up (he doesn't eat the meat just drinks the soup).
Touch wood it's been much better and he hasn't had an episode for a couple of years, even when our neighbours had chainsaws going (which was what triggered it initially)

Good luck with it !

Also forgot to mention. Crystals!! Very common and UTIs can be secondary to crystals. Ask your vet to do a urine microscopy. Hope he gets sorted

BEO · 09/10/2023 05:51

We think it may be crystals, what are treatment options for this @C2197 ?

With crystals it depends on the severity. Sometimes a specialist diet designed to break them down is enough, but some cats do require surgery if the crystals cause them to block.

We had an old cat who needed surgery due to a blockage - he was very unwell and we almost lost him. It can be life threatening so if you're concerned about them he must see a vet asap.

One of my cats scratches himself creating open wounds when he’s anxious, it doesn’t happen often and I can normally calm him with Feliway but it’s happened during both my pregnancies. The first time it hadn’t occurred to me he’d know I was pregnant, or that it would make him anxious, but the vet thought this was likely the cause.

C2197 · 09/10/2023 08:06

usually anti inflammatory for pain relief, antibiotics if a secondary infection and urinary diet. The urinary diet will depend on what type of crystals he has so you can’t buy without a urine microscopy to confirm this. Different urinary diets have different PHs depending on the crystal type so you don’t want to get the wrong one. And in extreme circumstances, surgery.

@margotrose I am very concerned about him and we hhave seen a vet twice last week and have a follow up on Thursday so he is under the vets care. He is still passing urine all the time just little and often. Vets said his bladder is not blocked both times they felt him but will continue to go back until he is sorted .

Sorry - I did see you'd seen a vet - I didn't mean to imply you weren't worried!

As long as urine is coming out he should be okay, but the minute you see him trying to urinate and nothing comes out, he must go to the vet. I honestly can't emphasise that enough.

BEO · 09/10/2023 17:19

@margotrose ill be going back until he’s sorted. They felt his bladder both times and said it was empty. He seems to use the litter tray loads when he’s downstairs and small amounts are coming out but then if he’s chilling or upstairs asleep he goes hours and hours then when he does go there is more wee so he can hold his bladder and it does get full but it seems to be when he’s alert and about that he’s using it loads.

like I said he’s on anti inflammatory and had antibiotics, I am also trying some herbal remedies like cystease capsules and another cat urinary supplement with good reviews . He is fine in himself, eating drinking and doesn’t appear to be in pain. I wonder if my pregnancy hormones have upset him abit and that’s throwing him off and stressing him in which case antidepressants may be needed.

But I agree with you if I thought no urine was coming out or he seemed unwell then I would take him straight to vets but like I said at the moment he is passing urine but just small amounts constantly. Thanks for your help I didn’t mean to snap .
