My house stinks!!!

This week i’ve adopted a stray - who is quite possibly the loveliest car I’ve ever met (though I may be bias) but my god does my house stink.. and I’m blaming the litter tray. It’s an open tray. With litter and cleaning it daily. But even still, all I can smell is the cat tray. It’s so pungent! I’ve had the windows all open ajar, I’ve mopped the kitchen. I’m trying to avoid spraying chemical scented fresheners..

Please give me tips as to how I can get my house to smell fresh and clean again.

FYI he’s 6 months old. Was thoroughly bathed on this first day here. Is microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and de-flead.

Is he neutered? I rescued a cat and omg the smell was horrendousz

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2023 16:44

He's spraying round the house.

Kyogo67 · 29/09/2023 16:44

Are you using clumping litter? Then the pee smell is scooped out every day and doesn't build up.

You can get litter deodorant powder that you sprinkle on top after cleaning too.

I have clumping litter , a plug in in utility room where the box is and also use the deodorant powder . This keeps everything under control

VioletMar · 29/09/2023 16:50

He’s a ue to be neutered in 3 weeks. He’s 6 months old and quite litter trained. The smell seems contained to where the tray is so I don’t think he is spraying the house yet

Is it poo or wee that's stinking?

If it's poo, then a change of food might help.

If it's wee, and you're sure he's not spraying, use a decent clumping litter, and make sure it's plenty deep enough.

VioletMar · 29/09/2023 16:51

No. I’m not but I’ve just jumped online to see what I can order in

I think it’s poop… good tips.

I’ll check.

Intersand is the best litter IME. You need a deep tray and deep litter.

Beamur · 29/09/2023 16:52

Cat urine can smell very strongly. It might be a bit less pongy after he's been snipped.
Definitely get a covered tray.
I've recently changed to using either wood pellet or paper based litter and it's much less stinky.

Spaghettihulahoops · 29/09/2023 16:55

I use wood pellets as they soak up all the wee and it smells less. One of our cats has stinky poo so we use a dog poo bag to muck those out as soon as we notice.

erikbloodaxe · 29/09/2023 16:56

Intersand is absolutely the best litter. Odourlock is just brilliant

Silverballet · 29/09/2023 17:09

If it's poo, then it should only be smelly as long as the poo is left in the tray plus a few minutes to dissipate, same as if a human went to the bathroom for a poo. There's nothing special about cat poo making the smell linger for hours after cleaning away, although some can be smellier than others at the time of doing.

If the poo is left to sit for too long without getting cleared away it'll stink the room out for far longer.

Silverballet · 29/09/2023 17:12

Also, cat urine smells very different to cat poo, and cat spray smells different to urine. Urine smells like urine, poo smells like poo and cat territory scenting spray smells festeringly pungent and not like the other two.

I have a cat who can make me gag, cry and wretch if she ever eats certain wet food or certain dry foods.
I've found own brand Complete dry foods stop it, look for the word complete (this is important) Whiskas, gokat any food that tries to make it look 'colourful' will stink your house out so forget they exist. Expensive dry foods tend to stink her out too, she needs gentle introductions to the more expensive stuff.

The dry complete food itself will look and smell boring even to you as a human. Give the food for a couple days, IT WILL TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO CLEAR.
Sainsburys chicken or trout (£3) or Co-op salmon (£2.60) own brand (other BORING brands available) always sorts mine out, she's a bin raider and a hunter so I am always being met with unexpected stinky the boring ass dry food stops the stink but she also eats less, poops less, doesn't eat shit out of bins and is generally more settled.

Get him used to own brand BORING AS FUCK complete dry food then if you want to slowly introduce more expensive brands try it.

This isn't true. On the right diet the poop will smell for a few minutes and then dry out. I've often found poop in the tray and been surprised because there was no smell.
Cat poop from a healthy cat should not be causing a stink. Neither should human poop

Fairymother · 29/09/2023 17:28

Cat poop just really stinks. The first months with my cats were awful until they started going outside. Now they rarely use the tray, but when they do i smell it the second i enter the house. My friend has a house cat and her place always has that smell. You literally have to clean it the second he goes so the smell doesnt spread around the house. Then spray air freshener 😅

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/09/2023 17:42

I switched mine over to grain free biscuits ( they have pouches as well) gradual change . They smell a million times better

Our female never buries <sigh> the male dioes so his waste is all dried up by the litter . Hers sit defiantly "C;mon Serfs get on with it "

I can tell when she's gone out and eaten snails , it;s unholy !

If you clean round the tray make sure it isn't something he'll want to pee over to overcome the smell of it .

And YY once he;s neutered he'll improve .

Cupcakekiller · 29/09/2023 17:42

Get a litter box instead of tray?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/09/2023 17:47

Ours have a big covered tray and a huge deep open tray ( its one of those flat boxes that goes under the bed for storage )
He has the tray , she has the covered box , its what they decided .

Now , their doesn;t seem to be a photo of your lovely cat ...................

ParadiseLaundry · 29/09/2023 19:16

Once he's neutered the smell will improve massively.

With our cat he would literally pee in the tray and it stunk immediately. within 24 hrs of him being neutered the smell improved massively and within a week it was better still.

This.
I also have a covered litter tray and run an air purifier in the area around the litter tray.

WellThisIsFun1 · 29/09/2023 19:36

We really do need a photo of the stinky devil...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/09/2023 20:03

Was thoroughly bathed on this first day here

Ahhhh , he;s getting his own back !

"Bloody wash me eh? Well enjoy this "

Our old cat used to leave a hairball on the carpet after every Vet visit , she must've had some secret compartment in her innards to store them . Without fail we'd be rewarded by a solid hairball (after spending ££ on her ).
