Suspected UTI. What can I do while waiting for her appointment?

My girl has been weeing outside her litter tray. I caught her at it and when I blotted the carpet there was a pinky/orangey tinge to it.
She’s been a bit agitated and whiny but most of the time she seems ok in herself.
She does still use her tray and I’ve obviously been watching her more closely. She will go back and forward to it a few times and only wees a little each time.
Anyway, I have an appointment in 2 weeks for her at the Pdsa hospital (I’m on a low income and had to cancel her pet insurance after the price increases just became unaffordable. She’s only ever been to the vet once before for a check up when I first got her ). Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to make her more comfortable in the meantime? Anything I can give her to eat or drink maybe?
Obviously if she gets worse I’ll take her to the vet where she was originally registered.

Two weeks?!
She'll potentially be in a lot of pain and needs antibiotics now!

I understand, I took on my mum's cat's after she passed away. After 5 years, I still have one of them. Felix is 18 now and deteriorating. My brother promised he would pay any vet bills but his horrible partner has stopped all contact. I have no money left at all to pay for any more vets bills. I can only think PDSA as a solution for us. I love my pets more than any human.x

She needs to go asap. You really can't leave her for two weeks.

melmonroe · 29/09/2023 00:47

Cars are really good at hiding pain and discomfort. She needs a vet sooner than 2 weeks. Like humans untreated uti can cause kidney problems. Does she not see a vet for flea/worming treatment?

BluebellsForest · 29/09/2023 00:55

A urine sample can be collected at home and taken to the vet for testing. That might help move things along.

Have you told them what the issue is when booking?

To be specific, have you told them that there appears to be blood in her urine?

margotrose · 29/09/2023 07:47

I'm really sorry but you can't leave your cat like for this two weeks. She needs to see a vet today.

Bloody urine would be an emergency appointment in our practise.

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to post and then disappear.
I have managed to get her an appointment at a local vet on Monday. She is eating and drinking normally and is sleeping well. She’s much less whiny today.
I’ll figure out how to get a sample from her over the weekend and appreciate the advice. Thank you

You could switch her to a urinary food and add a little water to her wet food. Consider any causes of stress too.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 30/09/2023 07:44

You can buy a cystitis paste to add th her food, only a few quid, also add water to her wet food and try to get as much fluid into her as possible, but cat milk and dilute it down. It won't solve the problem but hopefully will take the edge off it.

margotrose · 30/09/2023 11:16

I'm glad you've got an appointment.

If you can get some, Cystease/Cystaid is good for cats who struggle with urinary health and it can be taken long-term as well. My 3yo male has urinary problems and we also give him a supplement called D-Mannose (again, can be taken long term) which seems to have really helped him.

Make sure she has lots of access to water (or cat milk if she likes it) and make sure to give wet food as well if possible.

onitlikeacarbonnet · 30/09/2023 11:42

Thanks. I have ordered some food so I’ll get her started on that as soon as it gets here. Meantime I’ve been giving her a little milk and wet food is usually a treat but she’s having that every day now. I’ll add a little water to that too. Hadn’t thought of that. Thank you x

Our vet basically said to get wet food into ours everyday - it doesn't matter what brand it is, as ling as it's wet and gives him a decent amount of liquid.

You can get specific urinary food but mine will only eat the dry version - he looked at the wet like I was trying to poison him Grin
