Cats and mice

Hello lovely cat people,

A few of you may remember from this ongoing saga

I have a couple of questions - how does one stop a cat (Kevin) from bringing live mice into the house? The cat flap was a mistake and a half. I got it so that elderly mama cat could come and go in winter rather than me having the back door open whilst I wfh (the two young ones were using a window). She declines to use it and actually kind of uses it as a window to peer in at me until I open said door. Kevin has got the hang so well that he brings in live mice for the craic. Can this be stopped? Do they stop? Last week I was left an actual mouse head, yes a fucking HEAD, outside the back door!

Is there a cat mafia? Will it be in my bed next? Am I daft in thinking that he only catches mice at night? That is when I catch him bringing them in. What do I do.....?

You need the fresh to the market 'only cat' cat flap that won't open if they have something in mouth!

Those mice are gifts from Kevin….

And excellent name for a cat.

Is this a real thing? Do they need collars? They don't wear them as they are half wild.

Kevin was abandoned by the previous owner who named him. I did name the baby one Perry though! Its a long running thing but I didn't actually want a cat but here we are 12 months on.....

No it doesn't stop. Our cat flap is now strictly exit only. That said we've stopped getting mouse bodies outside the door now too so maybe we could open it...

According to Roger McGough there is indeed a cat mafia - https://clpe.org.uk/poetry/poems/cats-protection-league .

We have never had a mouse actually in the bed but a fine, fat, furry corpse was once lovingly laid out beside the bed just where DH would step on it. Luckily I spotted it before he did so.

If you have cats of a mousing disposition I’m afraid they will catch mice at all hours of the day or night, and, yes, they will bring them home. They think you are a bit stupid and need to be fed, and also to learn to catch your food - hence the live ones.

A large plastic receptacle and some stiff card is handy for catching the live mice and transporting them to the bottom of the garden. A spade is useful for transporting the bodies and or bits of bodies to be disposed of - we pop them into the foxes’ earth - someone might as well benefit.

We have never managed to stop our cats bringing home unwanted gifts.

Yes it's a real cat flap.

Don't need collars for it.
Have a google.

Out cat flap is now exit only. At can manage to lift with paw from outside but struggles to do that with something in its mouth!

Get a lockable cat flap or jam your current one closed somehow.
Wait til your cat finds a mouse in your own home that got through some cracks somewhere. Mouse blood streaks around. So gross.
