Whiskas is 15% smaller

I was watching the Jeremy Vine show this morning. It was about how things have gotten smaller and still cost the same or more.

I was horrified to discover Whiskas pouches are 15% smaller. I was wondering why Dcat was loosing weight.

Shouldn't they tell you this on the box?

It's the same with all brands changing the size of products - they don't like to draw your attention to it. But the boxes and packets do all say 85g on them, and the feeding guidelines on the box reflect that rather than the old 100g size. I contacted Whiskas to complain back in January when it happened and they claimed research showed most cats don't eat 100g in one go, so customers wanted smaller portions. Uh huh, sure.

BIWI · 27/09/2023 12:10

All the major brands have dropped from 100g sachets to 85g sachets - but that's been done over the last few years. It's not a recent thing.

The information is on the box, but you have to look for it!

powershowerforanhour · 27/09/2023 12:12

Good, most cats could do with eating 15% less.

My husband pointed this out recently when I bought a big box of Whiskas as a treat for our cat. She usually has supermarket own brand but the Whiskas was on special offer so only 11 pence more for a box of 40 sachets. Sure enough the Tesco sachets contain 100g but Whiskas only 85g. Back to own brand I think.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/09/2023 12:39

Felix AGAIL is still in 100g sachets (or was last time I bought a few weeks ago)

cookielove · 27/09/2023 12:43

Felix is 100g for all types.

DrCoconut · 27/09/2023 12:49

Out of interest how many pouches does your cat eat each day? Ours can go 5 plus dry food available and I catch him trying to raid the box if meals are not forthcoming in a timely manner 🤣. He's a big cat and vet isn't concerned about his 6.2kg weight.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/09/2023 13:03

Our four cats go though 8-12 pouches per day, plus dry food, plus anything they catch.
3 are average sized at just under 4kg, one is a big lad at nearer 6kg.
My first ever cat who was an ex stray (and built like a brick shithouse) used to eat two or three 400g tins a day 🙀.

No it's not - look here

Some of their pouches are 80g, not even 85g

catwithflowers · 27/09/2023 17:19

Ours has two sachets a day. She is quite old.

Whatnowfgs · 27/09/2023 19:58

The cat is 13. She has had two pouches and dry food for the last ten years. I have not read the box in years. Confused

If she's 13 and visibly losing weight, take her to the vet. When you make the appointment, ask to pick up some non absorbable cat litter first and bring a urine sample with you to the appointment.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/09/2023 00:03

I noticed when the picture changed on the box , they brought out a new design and shaved 15% off the contents .

I haven't told the cats , they'd riot .
Male Cat would hold the Vet entirely responsible , he always comments that Male is "heavy" , no mention of the word "diet" just yet .

S910441 · 29/09/2023 00:20

Sorry to say, but Whiskas is the cat equivalent of McDonald's.

caringcarer · 29/09/2023 00:52

The recommended amount of food to feed an average sized cat is 300 grams a day so 3 X 100 gram pouches. If you feed only 85 gram pouches you should offer 4 especially if your cat is losing weight. I have 2 cats a very small female and a large half Maine Coon male. I put down 3 pouches between them for breakfast so 300 grams and a 400 gram tin in the evening. It all gets eaten. There are cat crunchies left out but neither are very keen. I leave a few out because it helps clean their teeth. I occasionally offer my small female cat a pouch at lunchtime if she is about because her brother eats the larger share. She eats some but then wanders off and leaves the rest and he kindly finishes it off. Sundays I cook them a large chicken breast to share and Wednesday they share some tuna in spring water. They soon eat that up. They also have kitten milk a few times each week. My female cat loves it so much. Neither cats are overweight for breed.

Whatnowfgs · 29/09/2023 12:31

She does have access to as much dry food as she wants too.

She is due her annual check up and booster this week so I will ask advice from the vet.

How did you get on at the vet checkup OP?

Whatnowfgs · 15/10/2023 22:14

She hasn't lost any weight at all. She is her ideal weight.

I hadn't weighed her myself. She just looks slim in comparison to my two dogs. Neither of them are overweight either but they would be more padded than the cat.

Good to hear she's ok, thanks for update
