Cat pooing on floor

So I'm going to apologise about the direct nature of the title but that's my problem really. I have a two year old indoor cat and he's not good with the litter tray and never has been. I've tried every combination of litter/ locations/ new trays and he'll avoid using them. He pooed in the bath for several months and now it's on the floor of the bathroom, occasionally right next to the clean tray. I feel like I can't bring anyone to my house until I get this sorted out! He's a lovely boy, well adjusted and happy but just will not use the blooming littler tray with any consistency. I'm at my wits end. I'd be so grateful for any advice!

Generally, cats that toilet in the wrong places aren't actually happy. I'd be looking to work out what can be done to enrich his life, is there any reason he can't go outside?

I would start off by restricting his access to the rest of the house until you've got this sorted.

We live on a really busy road and I've lost two cats to it already. I wouldn't want to risk it. He's only toileting in the bathroom so I can't lock him in there unfortunately

Maybe I do need to invest in some extras toys for him.

Maybe a dirt tray instead of litter?

Perhaps more than toys, you need to find ways to meet all his cat needs. Lots of cat enrichment info around.
