New Kitten advice

Hi, it's a long time since I had cats! We're inheriting a kitten later today, it was dumped and the person who found it can't keep it so we've agreed to. What do I need to get and what don't I need to bother with? Should I keep it just in one room to begin with? I'm planning on contacting a local vet to get the kitten checked over and that's about as far as I've got so far! Any advice is very welcome, thanks in advance 😀

You need to get another dkitten immediately.. They will thrive together. Maybe vet or local rescue will know of an oddment you can adopt... Dkittens are best in pairs...

After getting your kitten checked out at the vet (jabs, fleas, worms etc. plus a general health check), I do tend to agree that another kitten of a similar age would be a good idea.
Do you have an idea how old your kitten is? That will help define the advice you need.

Non clumping litter incase he eats it. Kitten litter tray.

Sorry for such a delay and thank you so much for the suggestions! I don't think another kitten is an option right now as we already have guinea pigs and it would just be too much I think. This kitten has already been stalking th guinea pigs and even jumped in their cage once - we will have to get a lid for it! Other than that she seems to have settled in nicely, has been eating and using the litter tray ok and we've put her in the slate room with food, water, toys and her bed overnight. Will take her to the vets in a few days to get her checked out and will def be buying some insurance!

Oh and sorry, here's a photo ❤️

Photo didn't work.... I'll try again! Also she wasn't in the slate room, she was in the spare room! She was so good overnight as well and is now snoozing in bed with me. Phone call to the vets later to book her in for a check up.

Oh my gosh she’s so beautiful!! With naughty in the eyes! Perfect!

GuppytheCat · 27/09/2023 07:48

Goodness. She's not very old, with those bluey eyes. How heavy is she?

She'll need kitten-specific worm and flea treatment (and kitten food), so it's good that you're going to the vet.

GuppytheCat · 27/09/2023 07:56

You didn't mention whether you have scratching post. The cardboard scratch mats are a good cheap option

That's a dinky kitten. Very pretty.
Toys toys toys. But only have a few out at a time so you can rotate them. Boxes, tunnels, scrunched up paper. Wand toys.
If I was going out for a few hours I would build a sort of fort for the kittens with a chair, cardboard boxes, old throws and tunnels and sprinkle a few treats in to be found.

Doremisofarsogood · 27/09/2023 10:54

Thanks - I plan to weigh her today to get an idea, probably can't get to the vets until next week.

Scratch post has been ordered, arriving tomorrow.
She loves toilet roll rubes so she's been happily chasing those about this morning and has also learnt how to climb onto the table - while I'm trying to work there! She is definitely becoming more confident already and she certainly has a hint of naughty about her I think!
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, I love the idea of a cat fort in the spare room - will do that tomorrow as I have to go out for work.
